Jeff this is not a 100% right but in our Jr. kart our EGT is around 1050 to 1150 with the rpm's around 13800ish How is it running open like you say? Might load up some if he's not on it. Now we also are learning how to tune and was told the same thing. I have my high side just cracked open just a little because I'm told at some of these tracks Bryan will not use the high side much. You might not want to teach him how to tune it on the track at this point until later when he gets more experience, don't want him to stick the motor. But we start Bryan out on the low side at around 2 turns open and let him open it up as he gets going. I have found that with Bryans extra weight if we start it open at 2 1/2 its hard for him to get the jump on starts until it clears out. So we start out lean to keep it crisp and then open it. Be careful letting him adjust the carb just starting out. Good luck see ya soon. Hope this helps some. _________________ St. louis Mo. |

Jeff,
You have a PM....
On the EGT... Call the engine builder to make sure where the carb should be set at first... _________________ Miles Racing

The EGT works different from the CHT. You want to get it as high as possible. At some point, it will get a little lean, and you’ll get a little detonation and the EGT temp will go down. At this point you open the high speed needle just a little and run the engine just below that peak.
Same thing on the bottom, coming out of the tightest turn on the track. Be aware that the temps will be lower on the low speed, but the tuning is the same. If the temp is lower on lap 3 than it was on lap 2, open the low speed needle.
The temp will drop with detonation. It will also drop if you’re to rich, so if it goes down, first test for lean, then, if it goes down more, it means you’re rich.
Be aware that the maximum EGT will change with air density, so it’s always good to have an air density gauge handy.
It will also change with engine compression changes, so it’s good to have a “good” compression gauge. Check it often.
Fuel octane can have some effect.
It may sound a little complicated, and it does take some time to get it down, but it’s well worth the effort.
The important thing is that unlike the CHT, as long as the readings are going up, it means more power. There is no such thing as “too high of an EGT reading”
We ran the probe about 3.5” from the face of the piston, (not to important) with the tip of the probe in the center of the flow. (very important) _________________ If the data does not support the theory, get a new theory. (Al Nunley)
