|
|
When the engine is not running and I spin the axle so the chain turns the drum - it spins fine until it hits a certain speed and then makes a grating metal on metal sound and everything stops. It will still turn after that and can just repeat the process.
When this first happened, it was on the track and seemed to run fine. Replaced the clutch drum and 11 tooth bushing but that didn't fix it.
Any ideas on what this could be? My clutch puller broke tonight so have to get another one before I can look at clutch myself - but it seems fine from the outside and I am new to all this so don't know what to look for anyway.
I have uploaded a video (5 secs) of the noise it makes when turning if this would help anyone: http://youtu.be/HoAbgtBwGng
Thanks. |

| How tight is your chain? Doesn't look like you have much slack in it. |

i don't think its too tight and it wasn't too tight when it first happened at the track - but how much slack should it have?
So just for grins, I went out and gave it more slack and it couldn't re-create the issue. Its too late to start the engine to see if it appears but I don't understand how that could affect it - don't remember the chain getting tighter our last time out when the problem first appeared (which was in the 3rd heat after 2 other heats that went fine).
Thoughts? |

| Some might say not legal, but try some grease in the bushing. |

Ray, have you seen this specific situation before on the noise or is the grease related more to the general maintenance people talk about with the bushing? |

| JMO, with the platic bushing they mfg. with xtra clearance because its plastic. If not lubed at certain rpm before the clutch engages there is vibration hence the noise. Don't run the chain too tight and I always lube the bushing and between runs squirt chain lube behind the nut, some will get in there. I have run an 11th for a whole season with no problems doing this. |

Thanks Ray. Makes sense - there wasn't a ton of consistency in the noise and the loosened chain last night seemed to make it very hard to get the noise / vibration. What lube do you suggest?
And what is your experience with the Rotax rule really on using lube?
Thanks again. |

| I know the new bearings have a O ring to keep lube from going into the clutch. Don't know about the bushing. For club racing prob. don't have to worry. Don't over do the lube. |

Rotax released a new 11 tooth bushing that requires the o-ring, further restricting any grease from getting onto the clutch with the 11 tooth setup.
One other thought...are the bushings getting loose in the driver gear? In other words, can you easily push it out with your finger? If so, I'd suggest replacing the driver gear too. I had one that ate bushings and must've been slightly out of spec, but it wasn't visibly obvious. _________________ Chris McGinley

Thanks! It was loose when first I took it apart but the new one was tough to get in there - so think that is not the case. I also swapped out the drum to make sure that wasn't the cause. However, I don't have an extra 11 tooth. Will try that if the grease and looser chain doesn't help. I know that I need the new style with the oring but was waiting to do that until EOY - but might try that if I have to buy another 11-tooth. |

| Also, where can i get an update repair manual that shows the new clutch and how to work on it? All the PDFs I have are all 2000 or 2003 year updates...Don't know if they have info in there that helps also. |

OK - here's the verdict after the weekend. Installed new bushing, ensured appropriate slack in chain and put a little grease inside the bushing. Worked great. Will follow that maintenance - and get a new 11tooth driver as there does seem to be some play in there that probably aggravates the situation.
Thanks for all the help from everyone. |
