Just want to say this thread is great timing as I have been able to go throught my new to me Rotax Sr. and Arrow Ax-8. Spent the wekend going through each of the articles and linked threaded from the OP.

Glad I did too. the gear oil was low and dirty. Carb needed cleaning. and installed a bigger seat and added all the ballast. with my scales I was able to get right at my target wieght distribution.

Oh and what the heck size nut is the one that holds the gear on the clutch drum???? 36mm still isn't big enough. old style clutch.

It's 38mm, but 1.5" (38.1mm) will work too (water heater wrench). Best to get the socket turned down (shortened) so that it doesn't have the internal chamfer, to get better engagement on the very thin nut.

Oh good point on turning down the chamfer not much meat on the nut to grip.

Never heard of a water heater wrench. Ok googled that and I'll be damn Lowes has them.

Does anyone have a range of jets o should purchase for arizona/socal driving. For the most part just musselman and pkra, but if I have the funds maybe calspeed....

I'm jut curious about the 6-7 jets needed 99% of the time here in AZ

Wow those are pretty far from what I have. I just got my kart from Mass. and he had 172 through 158. Now here in Mississippi the damn thing would not run on a 165 and is prety rich on a 162.

My Son's Mini Max runs and likes smaller jets like mentioned above.

Looked at that graph that is linked in the OP's beginning post. changed it to F vs C for temp.

Fortunately I have a weather station so 92 degree and 991 Mb 85% humidity and Relative Air Density 90. It was showing 162 to 160 jet.

I guess I will go to the 160 after checking the pipe, plug and piston.

Just got my kart up and running. Everything seems to be good, Just need to get used to jetting and finding the right jets.

As for powervalve, how do you guys adjust when it kicks in? I dont mean the red knob, thats obvious. What I am asking is what RPM?

I haven't taken it around the track yet, just a couple hot laps in the 'hood getting her broken in etc.

Any other tips an tricks?

The RAVE valve should open at 7500rpm. The exhaust note will change as it opens. As for what you're looking for is the power curve to be continous and smooth. If the valve opens too late (or not fully open), you'll feel a drop in power on the high rpms and not pull to maximum rpm. If it opens too early, you'll get a dip in power around 6000-7000rpms and then it will quickly pick the power up again.

Thanks! Also, is there anyone charging a batt on an other than rotax battery charger? Just curious as I do not have one, but I do have very advanced RC chargers, able to charge at any voltage and amperage.

Justin, I recently picked up two of the Craftsman Platinum chargers:

They go on special from time to time and I picked two up for $24.00 each.

What I like about this package is the quick disconnect adaptors that come with it. You can attach clamping-style clips for charging the battery off the kart. Or attach the ring style adapter permently to a standard Rotax battery and quickly hook the charger up while the battery is on the kart. It also comes with a 12v car lighter-style adaptor. I actaully removed the 12v end and made an adaptor that fits the old style Rotax hook-up like the stock Rotax charger. So now with one charger and the three adaptors I can handle any situation with charging the kart battery.

Well guys, thanks for all the help!!

A couple months later I raced my first race, and had a clean sweep with qualifying, heat 1&2 and the main! Granted I was the only one racing Tag Sr, but I set the fastest Tag times between Jr, Sr, and Master... (all of us running Rotax by the way.)

Just did a big race here @ NOLA Motorsports Park. 1 hour endurance race finished 3rd.

Excellent thread... very useful info.

I just bought a used 2008 CRG kart that was barely run... so I will need a lot of this info for when the kart arrives next week.

I am a brand new owner in the Orlando area and will need help/info on how to do a once over of the kart when it arrives. The only issue it supposedly has is that the owner replaced the master brake cylinder due to the kart sitting a bit and it dried out and leaked a little. He offered to fill the cylinder and bleed the lines, but I figured I needed to learn how to do it so I said he could skip it.

He sent pics from the kart being loaded on the transporter... very clean kart, no dents, rust, scratches, etc so I have a good hope it is a very good condition, low use kart as he claimed.
