Hey guys,
I am completely new to the sport and I know pretty much zero as of right now. I figured this would be the best place to answer my questions.
I have decided to take the dive and purchase a chassis with the plan to run the LO206 class at my local track (CHMS) and I am a bit confused as to what chassis are designed for which engines. I have tentatively agreed to purchase a 2002 CRG Kali. I guess I just wanted to know for sure that the LO206 will be compatible with this chassis. The last thing I want to do is splurge on a kart that I can't use. Will this work? I understand that there might be some conversions required.
I really appreciate any help you guys might offer and I apologize if this is a very stupid question. All of this is just way over my head and I'm a little intimidated by the overwhelming amount of information that my little brain doesn't know how to process.

Hi Mark,
Yes the chassis will work. At worst you'll have to run a jackshaft and drive the axle from outside the bearing but I do believe I've fitted an Animal to a Kali of about that vintage.
Be sure to check out the chassis thoroughly, if possible have an experienced club member check it out with you and point out any problems you'll need to deal with or things that need to be added for your club.
I know it can seem overwhelming but you'll be fine if you take your time and ask lots of questions

Thanks so much for the info, John. The only problem with having someone look over it for me is that I am driving a few states away to pick it up.
I remember reading to look for any flat spots or bending in the frame. Any other major things that I should look for that a newbie would be able to spot?
Lastly, how much (roughly) would the jackshaft setup cost? I understand I would also need a mount. I'm just trying to keep a mental note so there aren't any nasty surprises later.
Thanks again! |

Some things to check on the chassis...
Inspect all the welds for any signs of cracks or broken welds (different colored paint at the frame welds could be hiding old problems). Ask if it's ever been bent or in any big accidents (obviously this assumes the seller knows the entire history of the kart and is honest). Sit in the kart and turn the wheels - does anything get hung up, bind excessively, or feel significantly different when turned one direction compared to the other? This won't tell you much, but if there's a major problem you might notice it. If karting is new to you, don't be surprised when the rear wheel lifts when you turn the wheel - it's supposed to happen. Spin the axle to see if the bearings allow it to turn freely. Check to see if the brakes work - depending on how long it's been sitting, they may need a rebuild kit - not too expensive, but CRG tends to be a little pricier than some. What does it have for a rear bumper and is it legal? An '02 wouldn't have come with a full-width bumper at the time, and depending on the rules, you may need a full-width bumper. There's more, but off the top of my head, those are a few things to look at. Search the forums and you can probably find more.
Personally, I'd get a Burris motor mount. Test fit everything without a jackshaft. If you find it doesn't fit, then get the Burris jackshaft kit - it works with the Burris mount. Check Burris Racing's website (google it) for pricing or better yet, contact them and they'll answer any questions you might have about it to make sure that you are getting what you need. It might be a little pricier than some of the other options, but it's a quality unit, and their customer service is excellent. |

Mark,
I am taking the plunge into karting this year as well, also with a LO206 powered kart (Bandit chassis). I plan to run primarily at Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI (although I live in NW Chicago area). I believe Concept Haulers and Road America are probably the two closest sprint tracks with a LO206 class (are there others?). If you do get the kart, you may also want to consider running at the Rock Island Grand Prix over Labor Day. They established a LO206 class this year. Good luck!

Rob,
Thanks for taking the time to post such an in-depth post. I'm going to heed your advice while inspecting the chassis and looking for a mount.
Roger,
I'm definitely looking into running the RIGP this year. Me and my friend are planning on making a trip up to Road America to run an LO206 race too. I'm sure I'll run into you at some point. Come say hey to the guy driving the CRG in the back of the field! |

The guys from CHMS will be taking the Traveling 206 show up to Dousman at Badger Raceway on the 20th of May. We hope to bring 10 or 12 but whatever number shows up, we will have some fun ! _________________ Racing is a State of Mind ! ... A very nice state to be in ! |
