Just bought my World Formula kart, which I have not driven. (Never driven a racing kart.)
On a very tight budget.
This is what I have:
Good quality full face helmet.
Rain suit and gloves.
So at the mimimum what else do I need to race with the other old farts. |

Paul I certainly hope I don't come off as a wisecracker but what is a "high quality " helmet? IKF ( and WKA ) require the helmet to be a certified Snell helmet , earliest allowed date is 2000. ( they are in 5 year increments. You will also need a neck brace , abrasion resistant jacket , long pants ( heavy , I.E. denim ),gloves and shoes that cover the ankle. This is the minimum , I'd check with your local track to get specifics. _________________ I breathe ,therefore,I race |

Bernie,
My helmet is a Bell with Snell 2005 as approved by SCCA for amateuer auto racing.
This may be a dumb question. I think for the first 6 months I will only be practicing. With that said are all of those things necessary???
I have watched a number of videos of the type of racing I hope to do and those old farts are not very aggressive and the speeds on the small tracks do not appear to be that fast.
Let me state it this way. Occassionally a person that has money to burn will buys a Hans for sports car lapping days (not racing with limited passing zones). Some use 6-pt harnesses while others just use the stock 3-pt belt, which does not protect one from submarining. However, my instructors had no problem riding with me using the 3-pt belt at speeds up to 130 mph.
I have watched a number of videos where karts have flipped and a neck brace has to be used.
But what I anticipate doing is day and night from this.
So might there be a comprise of what is really needed relative to what I will be doing???
IF I progess, I will certainly be getting the equipment you mentioned.
Thanks again Bernie |

What Bernie mentioned is the minimum required for most, if not all clubs. A lot of people wear a rib protector, but is not required |

Where is a good place to find a decent neck brace at a good price.
Then I see some types of neck collars being advertised. Are those required? |

Paul , go to "www.4cycle.com " Any number of vendors will have great prices. Turk Bros. for example has neck collars under $20. Not only will these add to safety they will help support you as the laps go by. Old farts ! I'm 62 !!

| There are a lot of things you can scrimp on with a kart when you are just starting out, but safety equipment should never be one of them. |

Well said Roger. If you have a $10 head buy a $10 helmet. _________________ I breathe ,therefore,I race |
