| Scattered thru the different forums are topics relating to safety. I think we need a safety forum. Many sanctioning bodies are reactive(NHRA comes to mind) rather than proactive. Karting is a great sport and we need to do whatever we can to improve the safety of all participants. |

Rob Daniels : I agree with you on the safety issues . The last time I brought it up reguarding hand-signals everyone wants to turn it around into a joke . Haven't we had enough serious injuries and deaths in the last few years . Seeems like NO one cares about it until it strikes close to home _________________ Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways totally worn out, shouting, "Holy **** what a ride!!!". |

Bob,
I wish we could get some of the heavy hitters in th sport to join in and get something going. First are equipment issues for which there are no standards other than the Snell for helmets. Second, only because it is more subjective is track safety in regard to layout, barriers, conduct on the track, etc. Third, we need to codify the above so everybody can get on the same page.
I am a retired scientist and physician and I would be available to help in any way. I think if we could get the organizations that sanction races to get on board we could accomplish something that could impact the racers and their families in a positive way. |

We had a real strong push a few months ago, again. It seems that when there's a serious injury or death there's a lot of interest that soon fades away.
I haven't heard anything recently from the (I think) Karting Safety Council.
My experience has been that people want to concentrate safety concerns on everything except driver training and procedures. Blame the track, blame the equipment, blame the shops for selling the latest high hp stuff, but don't blame the organizers for letting someone buy a 30hp TaG on Friday and race on Sunday with no training or certification process.
And certainly don't blame yourself for being too busy or impatient to go through a licensing program before you take your 30hp TaG out to race. |

why yes there is it's called KSI (karting safety International) and it was started back in April or may of this year by some of the people on this forum.
It has been a little quiet over the summer but hoping it will get rolling again soon our temporary home is at KartSafe@yahoogroups.com and you can leave message or Ideas.
Bob you are very right we need to get the US up to speed on a licence for all karters. People need to go through at least a year of on track training before getting in to competition IMHO.
It all started with this thread
http://www.ekartingnews.com/viewtopic.php?t=69347
I think maybe Rob and the guys have been waiting to see if any thing comes of it to create a section for safety.

So here it is, my first post. I agree that it would make a great forum topic on a subject that I believe will continue to play a larger role in when, where and for how much money we can race (road racing in particular). Insurance and lawyers be damned.
More regulations is not the answer. How about some self accountability instead. How many times do we have to hear about the person (that wasn't at the drivers meeting) not follow red flag procedures. Awful. Or how about hand signals? Geez, is it really that hard to reach an agreement on what means what, and USE them? I've talked to 'experienced' drivers that are still unsure what each flag means (I realize there are some track to track differences). To me that's pathetic. Give those corner workers a little respect.
A Safety forum could be a place to hash these things out, see if there is a general consensus.
Thanks for a great site |

A safety forum wont do squat unless there is an actual committee. And what I mean by committee is a group of individuals who are dedicated, open to suggestions, think "out of the box" and have the clout in our community to implement change.
These forums just turn into argument fests and nothing gets done. Also after and injury or fatality, the topic gets hot, than fades off till the next time.
Someone here mentioned driver training. Absolutely. Road Racing tracks are not going to spend alot of money because "karters" are complaining. We are the red headed step child. Stop giving licenses to idiots. Sanctioning bodies need implement some type of punishment for idiotic driving. Until orgs start taking this seriously it wont change. Good topic none the less |
