SUNDAY, APRIL 27

After wrapping up the trio of heat races with the final motos this morning, the first main events of the Stars of Karting Western Division filled what was a great afternoon of competition. The primary championship contenders stepped to the forefront at Miller Motorsport Park today, as in four of the five classes, the winners swept both main events. PCH Motorsports’ Gary Carlton (CRG) would not be denied in ICC, while Champion Racing’s Joey Wimsett (Intrepid) powered to the front in the TaG category with a pair of impressive victories. Bryan Eady (Intrepid) followed suit in the TaG ICC class, as did young Trent Hindman (Merlin) in the Cadet class. JICA featured the only split winners, as Tony Kart drivers Phil DeLaO and Gustavo Menezes both scored race wins on the day.

SATURDAY, APRIL 26

The first official day of Stars of Karting Western Division competition was completed under beautiful blue skies here at Miller Motorsport Park. In stark contrast to last year’s 100+ degree heat, cool temperatures in the mid-60s made for a comfortable setting for some great racing. As the opening race for the Western Division drivers, the paddock got the opportunity to see who would be challenging for race wins and championships this year. The turnout for the event is certainly not up to par, as just over 100 drivers are in the paddock, and theories regarding the reason for this lighter-than-usual entry are diverse. The struggling economy, the current cost of chassis and engines, and the insanely high fuel prices are the most common factors mentioned.

THURSDAY, APRIL 24

The Western Division of the Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by IndyCar Series begins its three race schedule this weekend at the Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. The series will make its second visit outside the city of Salt Lake City, moving the date from the hot month of July to the calm and comfortable month of April. Fortunately, rain is not forecasted for the area over the weekend with temperatures reaching highs in the upper 60s. The forecast on track sees many of the front runners from the Eastern Division opener three weeks ago in Ocala, Florida scheduled to race this weekend.
