The 2007 Snap-on Stars of karting completed the second round of the Western Division this past weekend at the Miller Motorsports Park facility, just outside Salt Lake City, UT. Over 100 degrees weather and dust put a lot of strain on the drivers, teams, and Stars staff with great racing still highlighting the weekend. 15 different chassis brands scored points on the weekend, showing how tough the competition was. When the final checkered fell though, CRG still holds on to the lead in the EKN Constructor Championship, scoring the most points on the weekend. Intrepid moved up to second, dropping Tony Kart to third.
Improving on their score from New Castle, the CRG pilots again scored the most points for the fourth straight weekend, including last year’s Stars National Finals. It was another 1-2 finish in ICC as Gary Carlton (PCH Motorsports) swept the weekend with Fritz Leesmann (Wunder-Bar Racing) and Nicholas Halen (PCH Motorsports) splitting the runner-up duties. Halen scored a podium finish on Saturday as well, making it an all CRG champagne celebration. CRG scored four top ten finishes in ICA and Spec Racer as well. Jacob Neal (PCH Motorsports) finished fifth and second to double up in ICA along with Cameron Motorsports’ Cody Jolly’s second on Saturday and Genesis Racing’s Kevin Glover overcoming engine trouble to finish eighth. In Spec Racer, Pacific Northwest driver Spencer Raine scored fifth and sixth place finishes with Nicholas Fairney (TrueNorth Motorsports) and Shaun Hodgson (Genesis Racing) scoring top ten finishes as well. Miles Maroney was the only JICA driver to score points with his fourth and ninth place finishes, his best in JICA competition.
Intrepid continued its strong presence in the top ten, scoring the second highest total of points on the weekend and moving up to second in the overall standings. Jordy Vorrath (Champion Racing) led the ICC contingent, scoring points both days with new teammate Jan Velez (Champion Racing) cracking the top ten in his debut weekend on Sunday. Tyler Dueck (Champion Racing) scored the ICA victory on Saturday with Colby Jenn (Champion Racing) placing ninth. In Spec Racer, Leading Edge Motorsports driver Colin Katzakian won Sunday’s main event after finishing sixth on Saturday. Last year’s Spec Racer championship runner-up Devon Sandeen (Checkered Flag Racing) stood on the podium Saturday to add eight more points to the total with JICA driver Scott Rossi (Leading Edge Motorsports) finishing 10th in the Saturday Final.
Having its toughest weekend of the year as a whole, Tony Kart was third highest on Saturday. Tony Kart USA pilot Jonathan Branam had two-tenth place finishes in ICC. Defending ICA national champion Joel Miller finished seventh on Saturday despite a flat tire and contact took him out early on Sunday. Chris Scribner (Scribner Plastics) had a difficult weekend as well in Spec Racer, clawing his way up to eighth on Saturday with a punctured tire forcing him to pit lane on Sunday. In JICA, Gustavo Menezes was runner-up twice with Jarvis Gennari and Tatiana Calderon scoring top ten finishes as well.
Scoring the fourth highest total on the weekend, Top Kart is now fourth overall - jumping over Birel and First Kart. Brendan ‘Mini’ Phinny was on rails this weekend, scoring both victories in JICA and 20 points toward the constructor championship. Brendan Underwood scored a top five finish in JICA as well on Sunday. ICC pilot Matt Jaskol was fourth on Saturday but trouble in the Prefinal kept him out of the top ten in the Final Sunday. Johnny Johnson finished his first ICA Final of the year, earning a fifth place finish.
Biesse and PTK scored their first points of the year, bringing the total to 18 chassis. Joey Licata Jr. scored points for TNR Motorsports with the Spec Racer win Saturday and fourth on Sunday. Bonnier Moulton (Spec Racer) and Donny St. Ours (JICA) helped PTK jump to 14th in the standings, one spot behind Biesse.
EKN Constructor Championship - Stars of Karting
The EKN Constructor Championship is calculated using only top ten finishes in the ICC, ICA, Spec Racer and JICA divisions. Each constructor will count their top two finishes in each class. Points will be awarded with a first place finish earning 10 points, down to a single point for a tenth place result.
