eKartingNews.com Driver Rankings - May 31

The EKN Driver Rankings is ready to enter another month after a full 31 days of racing in May. With many of the Driver Rankings regional series now getting underway, many new and old drivers are getting their first events under their belts. Along with the regional programs, the Stars of Karting series held the Eastern Division event at New Castle two weeks ago with a large number of entries and many drivers getting solid results to move them up in the each of the three different rankings.

With his two demanding performances in New Castle at the Stars of Karting Eastern round, PCH Motorsports Gary Carlton continues to extend his ICC Driver Rankings lead. With two top five runs in Indy, Team Top-Kart USA’s Matt Jaskol continues to sit third, still looking for his first Stars win aboard a Top-Kart. With a podium run on Sunday at New Castle, David Jurca (Italian Motors) holds on to third while Michael Vincec (Cameron Motorsports) and Jordy Vorrath (Champion Racing/Intrepid) swap spots to complete the top five.

Our ICC Driver Spotlight focuses on rookie Hayden Duerson. The Italian Motors driver had an outstanding weekend in New Castle, scoring his first podium finish on Saturday and worked his way up to 14th on Sunday after troubles in the Prefinal. To warm up for the 2007 season, Duerson ran in his native state series, the Florida Winter Tour, finishing ninth in the standings among many of the top 25 ICC drivers in the rankings. Under the watchful eyes of the IM staff that has a history of producing great young pilots, including teammate David Jurca, keep on eye on his progress as the year goes along with a possible first ICC victory in his near future.

Like ICC, ICA remains the same in the first three spots as defending ICA national champion Joel Miller (Tony Kart USA), Jake Rosenzweig (PSL Karting) and Chris Larson (MRP-Birel America) still hold their spots. After a DNF on Saturday, Miller bounced back to score a third on Sunday after holding off rookie Jacob Neal (10th in this ICA Driver Rankings release). Rosenzweig also scored a third place run, on Saturday, and was in a fierce battle Sunday, classifying seventh but gaining 24 points on Miller in the rankings. Larson had a tough weekend in New Castle but will look to bounce back at the next event. Rounding out the top five is the ICA Driver Spotlight pilot, Cody Jolly (Cameron Motorsports) and James Kennedy (G-Phactory/Sodi Kart USA), moving up three spots to fifth.

Jolly had a solid weekend in New Castle, picking up two runner-up finishes behind Brit Scott Jenkins (Champion Racing/Intrepid) both days. The Texan had a difficult rookie season in ICA last year, reaching the top ten just once in six Stars events. This year, he has finished better then 11th in all four of his finals, shooting him up the rankings over the last two months. Along with Vincec, the Cameron Motorsports squad has two sophomore pilots in the ICC and ICA driver rankings top five.

The top six positions remained static for the TaG Rankings with Wunderbar Racing’s Will Martindale still holding on to the top spot. Now ICA driver Brandon Jones (ArrowUSA) sits second with his stellar runs earlier in the year on the Florida Winter Tour. Zach Beard (FirstKart.com) and ArrowUSA teammates Conor Daly & Edward Fortier all gained a few more points over the New Castle weekend but stay in the same spots as last month. Fortier was on his way to a possible win during the Sunday Final when his throttle broke, leaving him to drive with one hand for the remainder of the race.

Another driver who put on a stellar performance Sunday was Comet Kart Sales’ Mark Dismore Jr. Copying his father’s performance from the day before, Dismore went from 31st to third in 17 laps in Sunday’s Final at his home track. The Indiana native competes regularly in the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series. In the first two events of the year, Dismore finished second both times behind ICC driver Kyle Wiegand, who has yet to run at least five TaG events as of yet. With a couple more podium finishes, Dismore may move up further in the top ten.

EKN Driver Rankings Calculation Process
The EKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in major North American races. Assembled using events from the previous 12 months from the current date, we use a driver’s top seven finishes in ICC to determine their overall current point total. The top five as used for ICA due to the lower number of available events. With each new release, results before one year ago at this date are discarded. To deliver this current ranking list, we tabulated the results of all the Snap-on Stars of Karting national events as well as other regional programs. We have also included the results for the major one-off events such as the Rock Island Grand Prix, SKUSA King of the Streets, the SKUSA SuperNationals, the KartSport Grand Prix and the Greeley Grand Prix.

Each race was initially weighted based on the prestige and history of the event or series with a score of 10 being the highest attainable base ranking. For 2007, the Stars of Karting Race of the Americas and National Finals, the SKUSA SuperNationals, Rock Island Grand Prix, as well as the North American Karting Championships and TAG World Finals are the only events to receive a score of 10 in their initial weighting. The Stars of Karting national series events draw a base ranking of 9 while the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup, Florida Winter Tour, and other regional program races were given a base ranking of 8.

Added to these initial rankings are two variables that help confirm the true importance of an event to the ranking process – field size and field strength. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field while the number of existing top 50 drivers (top 25 for ICA and TaG) entered offers another fraction of a point. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race.

Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best seven races for ICC and the best five for ICA and TaG, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking.
