The 2007 Snap-on Stars of Karting season is now underway after the running of the Mazda Race of the Americas at the Oklahoma Motorsports Complex in Norman, OK this past weekend. After rainy conditions and cold weather hammered the facility through the first two days of on-track action, clear skies and warm weather dawned over the 7/10 mile course on Sunday. With two finals on the schedule, CRG drivers put in strong performances to help the manufacturer debut atop the year’s first EKN Constructors Championship standings, which uses the top-10 results from the ICC, ICA, Spec Racer and JICA categories.

With drivers from five different CRG teams scoring points, the two-time Stars of Karting Constructors champion holds a 28-point advantage over Tony Kart. The system takes into account the two best finishes (within the top-10) of each CRG pilots Gary Carlton (PCH Motorsports) and Fritz Leesmann (Wunderbar Racing) went 1-2 in both ICC finals, both running at an impressive pace in each race. Jake Rosenzweig (PSL Karting) was top CRG finisher in both ICA finals with a fourth in race one and a runner-up finish in race two. Jacob Neal (PCH Motorsports) and Cody Jolly (Cameron Motorsports) were the other two point finishers in the division. Will Martindale (Wunderbar Racing) was third and second in Spec Racer, while Nick Fairney (TrueNorth/PSL Karting) scored a fifth in the second final. In JICA, Mikael Grenier (PSL Karting) and David Ostella (Cameron Motorsports) finished fourth and fifth in the first main, while Jose Zanella (PSL Karting) and Thomas Silva (SSC East) were sixth and seventh in the second main. All totaled, CRG ended with 103 points.

Tony Kart USA earned three victories on Sunday, led by JICA pilot Gustavo Menezes, who scored two for the team. Scribner Plastics driver Chris Scribner was the other Tony Kart winner, taking the victory in the second Spec Racer final. The NorCal pilot also was fourth in his first main event, pitching in a total of 17 counters. Other Tony Kart USA drivers who scored points included Danilo Dirani (ICC), Joel Miller and Guillermo Freile twice in ICA, and Jarvis Gennari (JICA).

Third in the standings after the first event is Intrepid. Brit Scott Jenkins and Canadian Scott Rossi each scored twice in the two finals, both running under the Champion Racing/Intrepid banner. Jenkins had two dominant victories in ICA, while Rossi was third and eighth in JICA. Two other Champion drivers scored points on Sunday, Tyler Dueck in ICA and Joey Wimsett in Spec Racer. DL Racing’s Keith Spicer finish eighth in ICC and Checkered Flag Racing’s Devon Sandeen earned a fourth in the second round of finals. Intrepid pilot Hector Alvarez went from the B Main to the second A Main to move up 30 spots through the field to earn Intrepid five more points on the weekend. It was a big boost to the team’s position.

Birel scored the second highest total in the first round of Finals to sit fourth, while First Kart rounds out the top five after the opening event on the strength of their JICA drivers, who logged three top-10 finishes.
