Event Preview: IKF Region 7 Southwestern Super Series - CalSpeed

This weekend will begin the seven-race 2007 schedule for the IKF Region 7 Southwestern Super Series, with the opener running at the popular CalSpeed Karting facility located just outside the California Speedway in Fontana, CA. The event is hosted by Karting Ventures, which also hosted the IKF Sprint Grand Nationals last summer. After a successful 2006 season, the Region 7 series will look to continue the momentum this year as they have a number of highlights to keep pushing the envelope.

The series will begin a six-track, seven-weekend schedule this weekend, with the region’s top drivers facing off in head-to-head competition on the first weekend of every month. In March, the circuit will head to Primm, NV to run outside the Buffalo Bills Hotel complex, a stop that was very successful for the series and the Kerman Kart Club last winter. They will then travel to the Full Wood Kingdom in April as the Tri-C Karters return to Moran Raceway to host round three. The first three rounds of the series will also see the attendance of EKN’s Rob Howden, as he will act as the co-event announcer. Howden was trackside for the first two races last year and had such a good time in ’06 that he’s extended his schedule to three events this time around.

The beginning of May will see Grange Motor Circuit host the fourth date on the schedule before heading to Buttonwillow Kart Track in the month of June with Bakersfield Kart Club. The series will then take two months off to bypass the summer heat wave before hooking up with Willow Springs Kart Club at the Willow Springs Kart Track in September. The series finale will then take the teams back to CalSpeed, this time with the Los Angeles Kart Club.

There are a lot of exciting things happening in the Region 7 this year. Series coordinator Don St. Ours was able to put together some television coverage for the opening round as well and he is looking for karters who would like to be featured. St. Ours has arranged for KTLA Los Angeles Channel 5’s Gayle Anderson to come to the CalSpeed facility on Friday, February 2. KTLA will be filming a series of live spot shots on Friday, from 7-10 am. St. Ours needs to be contacted by people who participate in IKF Region 7 sprint events and is looking for people of all ages.

Also new to the series will be the EKN Top Gun Award. The new program will select one driver each weekend, determined by a panel that will included EKN’s Rob Howden, based on their performance at the event. The panel will be looking for a standout performance, whether it’s a dominant win or a come from the back drive. Victory is not required, but hard work and dedication is. Each Top Gun winner will be profiled on EKN the following week. At the conclusion of the season, all the Top Gun names will be thrown into a hat, where one driver will be selected to win a prize that will be determined soon.

Another new prize program for Region 7 this season includes Liquid Eyewear, the Official Eyewear of the Southwestern Super Series. Liquid is a big supporter in the surfing and music industry, and now extreme athletes when partnering with the IKF Region 7. Throughout the year, the top five in selected classes each day will be awarded new Liquid Eyewear.

Heading into the weekend, roughly 180 pre-entries have signed on with the Junior classes leading the way. The most popular class thus far is the HPV 2 category with 30 entries while on the Senior side the HPV 3 category has 18 drivers.
