SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18
After four grueling days of on-track action in some horrible conditions, the main events of this year’s Rotax Grand Finals were put in the book today at the Kartodromo Viana in Castello de Viana, Portugal. The brutal weather continued on Saturday with intermittent hard rain being joined by high winds, making the racing rather treacherous at times. The sun only arrived, quite timely actually, for the opening ceremonies and driver presentations just before the mains. Team USA and Team Canada both battled through the days’ action, scoring several top-20 finishes, although no podiums and no top fives.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17
As the final day of qualifying action at this year’s Rotax Grand Finals, Friday’s schedule would be the most pressure-filled here at Kartodromo Viana, a racing facility located just north of Porto, Portugal. The third round of heat races were held in the morning and would qualify the top 28 drivers from each class directly into the Prefinal and Final on Saturday, while the ‘Second Chance Qualifiers’ in the afternoon would determine which competitors would live to race another day and which ones could pack things up and begin cheering for their team members. For Team USA, only three competitors were able to race straight into the mains while a further four needed big performances in the LCQs to secure their positions on the Saturday grids.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16
After wrapping up the available practice sessions and official qualifying runs on Wednesday, the North American drivers at this year’s Rotax Grand Finals returned to the Kartodromo Viana for the first wheel-to-wheel action of the event. Today’s excitement was all about the first two rounds of heat races, and intelligent runs were desperately needed by the Team USA contingent. Unspectacular performances in the qualifying sessions on Wednesday would ensure that the team members would start deeper in the grids than they would have liked.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15
After enjoying sunny skies and 70° temperatures for Tuesday’s opening practice day, the drivers at this year’s Rotax Grand Finals were greeted to clouds and even some light morning rain when they left their hotels bound for the Kartodromo Viana. The weather would remain cloudy, cool and extremely windy throughout the day as the schedule featured two practice sessions and the event’s official qualifying. In the end, rain would arrive to spoil the party, dampening the circuit for the afternoon time trials with what would eventually grow into a heavy storm.
