With Spring arriving in most areas of North America, the bulk of the 2006 racing season is just around the corner. With the late arrival of the March issue of Super Kart Illustrated, EKN can now publish the March SKI Driver Rankings. The month’s rankings were tabulated at the beginning of February, with only the WKA Daytona KartWeek and the first round of the Florida Winter Tour included in the rankings. Things remain similar to the December rankings, after the SKUSA SuperNationals.

Alex Speed will sit on top for the first addition of the Drivers Rankings to begin the 2006 season, but as the year moves on, Speed will begin to move down the rankings. That leaves a group of drivers looking to obtain the top spot. Included in that group are Kyle Wiegand, Jan Velez, Wesley Boswell, Gary Carlton, and David Jurca. Wiegand sits second this month heading into the 2006 season, but will be also working on his Formula Car career so he will be a wildcard depending on how many events he competes in. Sitting third is Jan Velez, another Eastern Division driver who made progress each event. Obviously, the victory in Norman at the Race of the Americas will help Wesley Boswell in the standings. The MRP-Birel America driver added the big victory to his CV and will be looking to add a National Championship as well. David Jurca is no stranger to the SKI Driver Rankings number one spot and is wants to return there sometime this season as he will acquire double the number of events as most drivers will, running both the Eastern and Western schedules.

ICA is wide open as well with many of the top drivers sitting in front not running at the Race of the Americas event. Number one driver Phil Giebler made a one-time run in ICC, running at Champion Racing’s home track in Norman and will be absent for most of the ’06 season. Chris Wehrheim has also moved his focus in other directions, running a new driver development business while competing in the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup division. The “Fastest Milkman in Karting” Kevin Glover was also absent in Norman as Genesis Racing is focusing more on their regional programs in the British Columbia area. Johnny Johnson and Joel Miller did not have the opening round they wanted, with Johnson finishing 13th and Miller crashing out of the ICA Repechage in the first lap incident. Steve Welk, Cole Whitt, and David Jurca will also be absent from the ICA division in ’06. Many young drivers will be moving their way as the year goes on, leaving any predictions for who will be on top at the end of the a mystery.
