| Series News: Gatorz Cup Preps for New Season |
| |
With competitors traveling in from all over the Western U.S., Canada and Costa Rica, this Saturday’s GATORZ Karting Cup race at Buttonwillow Raceway will open a season that is shaping up to set new records in participation and exposure, giving racers a path to Champ Car as well.
“We’ve had a very busy pre-season for Rotax,” said GATORZ Cup owner Andy Seesemann. “Sales are up and word from other so-Cal shops like MMK and Dave’s Performance is encouraging. Plus, we have new retailers like TNR and 2 Wild Karting who should add to this momentum in 2006.
“GATORZ participation grew about 15 percent last year. We expect at least that much growth this year, primarily in the International and Junior classes. Along with pre-season sales, Rotax’s new association with Champ Car further raises the awareness of how competitive, fun and affordable this brand of karting is.”
Adding to the excitement is the participation of two standout racers. Wes Phillips, the 2005 U.S. Rotax champion, and Juan Sanso, Costa Rican champion and pole winner at the U.S. Rotax Nationals, are entered to compete at Buttonwillow.
“After the great showing of GATORZ competitors at the Nationals, our series is recognized as the most competitive Rotax and TaG series in the country. I think guys like Wes and Juan are just the type of racers that Champ Car wants in Atlantics and then Champ Car in the next few years. This path is a good one, yet we continue to provide a rewarding venue for our recreational racers.”
Saturday’s season opener at this central California location is ideal for all western U.S. racers to get a taste of GATORZ action.
“Buttonwillow is a great track that always provides exciting racing. We run the entire 900 foot main straight which gives our racers the challenge of high speed and demanding infield turns," added Seesemann.
In other news, the GATORZ Karting Cup has decided to offer TaG Junior on a three-race trial basis. “Another series in the area offered the class for their first race, and then promptly dropped it,” said Seesemann. “We recognize that TaG Junior has potential in this area, and want to give those competitors a place to race. We look forward to them showing their stuff on Saturday.”
The Gatorz Eyewear Golden State Karting Cup is the largest and oldest Rotax Max karting series in the U.S. The series caters to the recreational racer and serious competitor alike, delivering competition, fun, camaraderie, and abundant track time. |
