Favorite and home town hero Jared Carlyle made it three in a row at the third round of the 2004 Rotax Max Kart Challenge at Te Puke's Fagan's Valley Raceway last Sunday in New Zealand in round 3 of the 2004 New Zealand Rotax Max Kart Challenge.

The Junior Engine Development support class also saw a win for the favorite, Earl Bamber; however, neither driver had it exactly easy over the two days of competition.

Carlyle, the 19-year-old who combines Kart and V8 Touring Car racing, set the second fastest lap time in qualifying and won the first and second heats only to be disqualified from the latter over a warning flag infringement.

That sent him to the back of the grid for the third heat - in which he fought his way back up to fifth place at the flag - but with no points from the second heat he had to start the pre-final from a lowly 12th spot on the grid.

In such a high caliber field that could have been the beginning of the end but Carlyle dug deep and again crossed the line in fifth place, enough for a third row start in the Final which he went on to win in style, catching and passing early leader, pole-sitter Bradley Tyrrell, then pulling away to win by six seconds, despite a late race scare when the heavens opened and the track was again lashed by rain.

Tyrrell crossed the line in second place, Palmerston North driver Andrew Hoare - reveling in the wet conditions late in the race - in third.

The biggest mover in the race, however, was fastest qualifier Paul Cameron who worked his way from 22nd (after failing to finish the Pre-Final) to eighth.

Wanganui's Earl Bamber was the fastest Junior Engine Development class driver on the track in both time trials but fouled a spark plug on the warm up lap of the first heat and could only watch as young Auckland driver Simon Evans, who had set the second fastest time in the time trials, take an excellent first up win from fellow Aucklander Scott Fountain and Jared Carlyle's younger brother Blair.

Bamber was back to his best in the second heat, working his way from the back of the grid to the front of the pack to cross the line a second in front of Evans who in turn had a five second buffer on Fountain.

There was drama at the start of the third heat however as front row starters Bamber and Evans slid wide through the first turn allowing Blair Carlyle to grab the advantage and claim his first heat win from Fountain, a recovering Bamber and Jake Pascoe.

That got Bamber back into the running in the pre-final, which he duly won from Evans, Phillip Saunders and Andrew Waite, and the Final, which he also won from.......Evans, Saunders and Waite.

Such was Bamber's dominance that he crossed the line 18 seconds in front of the battling Evans, Saunders and Waite trio, which had spent the best part of the race embroiled in a battle for second position.

This year's New Zealand Rotax Max Challenge is presented by New Zealand Rotax Max engine importer Right Karts in association with Arai helmets, Motorex lubricants, Karting Plus, Carlyle Kart Supplies, TWR Kart Supplies and Spark Services.

The Hamilton Kart Club will host the next round of the 2004 Challenge over the September 18-19 weekend.
