Go-karting back with a vengeance in Jamaica

International kart racing will return to Jamaica after a 10-year absence with a two-day meet at the Palisadoes International Raceway on July 10-11.

Dubbed "Karting Fury" by organisers, Jamaica Karting Association Limited (JKA), the five-event Jetcon International Go-Kart Race meet will attract between 45 and 50 of the toughest drivers from Jamaica, USA and Trinidad & Tobago, who will compete in 20 races over the two days.

The Go-Karting extravaganza is expected to cost some $600,000 to stage and will host competition in Lightweight, Heavyweight, Junior Sportsman, Rotax Max and 125cc Shifters classes.

The Junior Sportsman Class is expected to be hotly contested by young Jamaicans, all under the age of 15, battling away in wheel-to-wheel combat in four separate races.

Then, there is the competitive Lightweight Class that includes four Trinidad & Tobago internationals. They will also compete in four separate races.

The Heavyweight Class will see many of Jamaica's experienced drivers from the Jamaica Motoring Club showcasing their skills against other senior drivers in four races.

The showdown event of the meet, the 125cc Shifter Class, will be introduced to local spectators for the first time.

In a very fast category, the Jamaican competitors will tackle their visiting counterparts from the US and Trinidad & Tobago sporting their 125cc, five-speed shift Go-Karts.

These shifter karts are fast and are often described as the closest racing machine to a Formula One car, possessing an acceleration capacity of 0-60 in three seconds. Four races are also carded here.

JKA president Andrew Jackson announced details of the meet at a press launch at Automotive Art Show Room in Kingston yesterday.

Jackson said the revival of International Kart racing in Jamaica "is part of our vision to create race drivers for the future who can compete with the best in the world".
