| Team News: Marshall Baxter to Intern with Jim Howe Motorsports in 2013 |
| |
Marshall Baxter, 16, will intern with the Columbus, Indiana-based Jim Howe Motorsports karting team for the 2013 season, working on the team’s entries for drivers Cokie and Emma Gaich.
Baxter is the son of Donald and Michele Baxter, also of Columbus, and a junior at Columbus North High School. He is enrolled in the Columbus Area Career Connection (C4) vocational arts program, taking classes in the machine trades and automotive technology tracts at North and Columbus East high schools. C4 provides more than 100 career and technical classes to high school students in Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson and Johnson counties. Programs range from agriculture and business to health careers and protective services.
“I’m a race fan but wanted to get a feel for racing up close to see what it was like,” the youth says, “and I’m looking forward to going to the different races and tracks with Jim [Howe, team owner] and the team.”
This will be Baxter’s first involvement in racing. Duties will include various stages of race preparation for the team’s Birel karts in the team shop and at the track. He will be briefed in all aspects of the team operation as the team competes in events in the Indy Karting Series (IKS), Southern Indiana Racing Association (SIRA), and Whiteland (IN) Raceway Park series in central and southern Indiana.
Baxter is currently competing in SkillsUSA, a national program for vocation programs throughout the USA. He recently won the SkillsUSA CNC Milling regional competition recently held at Vincennes (IN) University and now advances to the state level in Indianapolis in April. A strong showing there could possibly earn him a trip to the national competition in Kansas City in June.
“With two karts this year, I knew I would be very busy and possibly overwhelmed,” Howe noted, “and I thought adding an intern to learn the mechanical side of karting would be beneficial to both of us. Marshall is very smart and will quickly pick up on karting, I’m sure. Who knows, it might be the start of a career.”
