EKN Constructors Championship - 2012 Final Standings

The 2012 eKartingNews.com Constructors Championship has wrapped up for the season with 23 events counted toward this year’s point total. Last month’s SKUSA SuperNationals XVI in Las Vegas closed out the year as the final opportunity for brands to gain valuable points and move up the standings. A wide range of chassis brands scored points throughout the 2012 season and with the final tally calculated, Tony Kart has secured its second straight EKN Constructors Championship title.

The season began with Tony Kart at the top of the EKN CC standings early but found itself trailing as the summer season began. With consistent results across the board, the Italian ‘green machine’ moved up to the number one spot just prior to the SKUSA SuperNationals. Throughout the season, Tony Kart was in the top-three for event points 16 times, eight of those as the top brand. TK finished the year with five top-five finishes at the SuperNationals, highlighted with wins by 2Wild Karting’s Billy Musgrave (S2) and Bonnier Moulton (S4) of MSquared Karting to extend the championship margin to 59 points.

“I would like to thank all Tony Kart drivers that helped us accomplish such an incredible achievement,” stated Andre Martins of OTK Kart USA. “This is a sign that the karts are working, the dealers are doing an excellent job, and the drivers are being able to extract the best results from the chassis. In a small gesture of appreciation for this championship, OTK Kart USA would like to send all drivers that drove at least one race on an OTK product - Tony Kart, Kosmic, Alonso or Exprit - a free commemorative t-shirt. Just send the race you participated in, your name, address, and size and OTK will send you something you can wear with pride. Once again, OTK USA would like to thank all of its drivers for their support; without it, none of this would be possible.”

CRG, the EKN CC standings leader during the summer months, finished second overall. Nearly 70% of their points came via the SKUSA Pro Tour events, including the SuperNationals where they placed third overall with four top-five finishes (zero wins). The Italian brand does have credit for the most points at a single event with 248 at the SKUSA SpringNationals. Should they improve results at the WKA events, CRG could have been at the top of the order at the end of 2012.

2010 EKN Constructors Championship winner Arrow finished the year third in the final 2012 standings, backing up their runner-up from a year ago. The Australian manufactured chassis was the only brand to score points in all 23 events on the 2012 schedule, its best result coming at the SKUSA Pro Tour SpringNationals with 76 points and scoring the highest total four times on the year. The SuperNationals saw only one Arrow driver on the podium, as Full Throttle Karting’s Paul Bonilla was runner-up in TaG Master, securing the Pro Tour title in the process.

The big move in the top-five was the jump from the Kosmic brand thanks to its SuperNationals performance. The OTK Kart Group chassis earned 88 points in Las Vegas, the highest total of the event thanks to seven top-five finishes, including wins by Colombia native Gabby Chaves (TaG Senior) and Brazilian Leonardo Nienkotter (TaG Master) of J3 Competition. The Kosmic brand also earned two SKUSA Pro Tour championships with Eddie Olpin in S4 and Rolison Performance Group’s Luke Selliken in TaG Junior. The move by Kosmic dropped Birel to fifth in the final standings. The Italian red chassis was top point earner at three events on the year, and only gained points at the SuperNationals on the runner-up finish in TaG Senior by Louie Pagano of DPK.

Top Kart, winner of the WKA Manufacturers Championship Trophy, finished the year sixth, just outside the top-five. The brand could see a boost, now with the MKP operation managing Team Top Kart USA in 2013. Seventh through 10th was a battle all season long. Intrepid, Merlin and GP held their positions through the end of the year with Praga jumping up to the 10th spot thanks to a late season charge.

EKN Constructors Championship Guidelines
The EKN Constructors Championship calculation process includes the top-five finishers in each recognized class (Senior-Master-Junior classes). The SKUSA Pro Tour, US Rotax Grand Nationals, and Pan American Challenge will earn points with the following structure; 1st=20 points, 2nd=16 points, 3rd=12 points, 4th=8 points, 5th=4 points. The remaining events will continue to be awarded with the previous ranking system; with first place earning five (5) points down to fifth place earning one (1) point for each category. There is a minimum of 10 starting entries for the class points to be counted toward the season total in the EKN CC standings.
