Hoping to have a strong run at the final round of the Ocala Gran Prix local program, Alex and Mikey Hornborg would enter the fifth and final weekend of the series with hopes high. Competing at the Ocala Gran Prix facility in central Florida, Alex would battle at the front of the stout Rotax Senior field while Mikey would withdraw from the event with a sore neck after straining a muscle during Friday's practice session.
After running extremely quick during the morning warm up sessions, Alex would qualify his Gary Carlton tuned Tony Kart in the second position in the Rotax Senior field. With drivers and champions from around North America descending on the Ocala Gran Prix facility to test for the upcoming Rotax Grand Finals, Alex was pleased with his pace, as he would look to fight for the win later that day.
Pacing himself through the prefinal and saving his tires to attack for the win in the main event, Alex would cross the stripe in the third position. Elevated to second after a post race disqualification by another driver, Alex would start the final from outside row one.
"I was very happy with the speed in qualifying," explained Alex. "Finishing in third in the prefinal, I was expecting an inside row starting spot for the final. Moving forward is always welcome, but I hate to give up that inside spot."
When the green flag dropped for the main event, disaster would strike for Alex as he was hit from behind in the opening corner and sent off the racetrack. Regrouping near the tail of the field, Alex would have a spirited drive to come home in the ninth position.
Hornborg continued, "I am extremely disappointed in what happened in the first corner. Being hit from behind in a bonehead move and taken out by a fellow driver that is under the same tent as you is very disappointing. Even more so when you have the chance at taking home the victory."
Similar to his teammate Oliver Askew's injury during the Florida Winter Tour, Mikey would endure a neck muscle cramp and tightness that would cause extreme pain during on track sessions. After trying to overcome the pain, Mikey was forced to withdraw from the event and watch from the sidelines.
Preparing for the 2013 racing calendar, Alex and Mikey Hornborg completed a successful 2012 campaign. With 2013 final plans all but set in stone, the Hornborgs will once again see action in the Florida Winter Tour, Florida Karting Championship Series, North Florida Rotax Max Challenge, United States Rotax Grand Nationals and other select karting events.
