| Indoor News: Grand Prix New York - Ironman Series Report |
| |
Tuesday, October 9th, Grand Prix NY held the latest round of its 2012 Ironman series. With 19 drivers in three different classes there was a lot of excellent racing throughout the field. The format for this evening was a 10 minute practice/qualifying session followed by the one hour race. Each driver was required to make a minimum of two stops during the race. The classes were 9hp lightweight (200lb), 9hp heavyweight (235lb) and GT5 (6.5hp).
At the end of qualifying, Andrew Wood dominated setting a time more than seven tenths faster than second place qualifier Gene Thyer. Third was Ennis Bragg. These three were the top qualifiers in the lightweight group. In the heavyweight class, Cory Rossi was first, followed closely by Dave Harmon and Adrian Salageanu. In the GT5 class (6.5hp), Bob Ondrovic continued his dominance in this class and grabbed the class pole followed by Pagie Jockimo and Richard Small.
At the drop of the green, the drivers up front pulled out and waited until they started hitting lapped traffic to make their first pit stops. Meanwhile, back in the pack there were some great races going on, particularly the GT5 class. Richard Small and Patrick Venus were swapping positions nearly every lap and this made it a challenge for the faster 9hp karts to get by them quickly and cleanly. At the end of the race, Wood would have nearly a lap on the entire field while Thyer and Bragg battled for second and third respectively. In the heavy class Rossi cruised home for his victory while Harmon, Salageanu and Gary Proft battled throughout the race. In the end Harmon would take second after Salageanu got caught up in traffic. In GT5, Bob Ondrovic continued his perfect season with his sixth victory in six starts. Paige Jockimo was second while Small was able to hold off Venus for the final podium position. |
