Series News: Ocala Gran Prix Fall/Winter Program Grows Leaps and Bounds in 2012

When many of the karting programs are either done or are beginning to wind down for 2012, the Ocala Gran Prix Fall/Winter Local Series just passed the halfway mark last weekend and continues to grow. With 85 entries for the first night race in two years nearly a month ago, the program was four entries shy of 100 this past weekend for the double points race on the Florida Winter Tour track layout. With drivers coming from up and down the east coast, competition was stout in multiple classes.

The biggest class of the weekend would be the Rotax Junior field as 30 drivers would take the green flag. Florida Winter Tour Rotax Junior Champion Oliver Askew and Rotax Pan-American Champion Ashley Rogero would be in attendance as well as Florida Winter Tour TaG Junior title holder Kyle Kirkwood. Jack Weprin would also make the trek south from the Northeast to add to the class's depth. Add in a host of local Florida drivers and tight field would battle for the race win. When the dust had finally settled, it was Rogero who would take the win ahead of OGP's Brian Lockwood.

Rotax Senior would see multi-time Team USA member Nick Neri and World Karting Association Manufacturer's Cup front-runner Jonathon Kotyk battle tooth and nail for the victory. After swapping the top spot on multiple occasions throughout the prefinal, Neri would take the point in the main event to become the victor. Roger Ralston would make his presence felt in the third position and would run some of the fastest laps of the race with Alex Hornborg chasing in fourth.

Mathias Ramirez and Nicholas Brueckner would lead the Rotax Mini Max field of twelve to the checkers as rain moved into the area just in time for the start of their final, while Harry Coulton would stand atop the box in Rotax Micro Max.

"It continues to get more competitive with each passing event," expressed Ocala Gran Prix President Jorge Arellano. "The competition is rising, the wheel-to-wheel action is getting better and it is becoming more challenging to win. We have big plans for the series in 2013 and will continue to push forward and grow this program to be the best in the state of Florida."

Arellano added, "We had drivers from Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, New York and New Jersey and a lot of them are front runners in national level programs throughout the United States. It really shows the depth of the competitors that are coming to compete."

Two races remain in the OGP Fall/Winter Program:
October 27, 2012 - Race #4 ** Night Race
November 10, 2012 - Race #5
