| US Rotax Max Challenge Series Profile: South Florida RMC |
| |
In cooperation with MAXSpeed Group, the administrator of the United States Rotax Max Challenge program, eKartingNews.com is happy to introduce the ‘US Rotax Max Challenge Series Profile’. Each month, EKN will profile one of the many Rotax series in the United States. Included in these regular overviews will be where each series races, who is racing there, and how you can become part of their program. Each US Rotax Max Challenge Series is a qualifying program toward the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals.
Florida is one of the highly populated states for Rotax racing. During the winter months, the state hosts the international Florida Winter Tour Rotax Max Challenge, welcoming drivers from multiple countries as one of the largest programs in the world. At the center of that is the Homestead Karting facility, the site of the South Florida Rotax Max Challenge. Based at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, it’s one of the largest series in the United States Rotax Max Challenge program.
The South Florida Rotax Max Challenge began taking shape in 2001 with multiple shops and enthusiasts giving it their full support. While the series has always called Homestead Karting its home, the program's director has changed hands a few times. Mostly due to overall regime changes from the national Rotax program controlled by its importers and distributers, Homestead Karting's South Florida Rotax Max Challenge finally settled in to the control of Tony Schroeder. Tony has maintained the famous Rotax region and due to its impressive membership volume, even contributed to the split of the Florida Winter Tour into two racing weekends, thus giving Rotax classes its own entire event weekend. The South Florida Rotax Max Challenge is still, and has been for many years, one of the top and most competitive local/regional Rotax series in the United States. Most competitors who race in the series will attest that every race weekend hosted by Homestead contains competition not unlike a national event.
Homestead Karting is unique in that they split its racing series into two seasonal championships, because unlike most tracks around the country and even around the world, the Homestead Karting facility and its South Florida Rotax Max Challenge operate 12 months out of the year. Snow and cold weather is never an issue, while dodging the occasional tropical storm or hurricane comes time to time. The option of having two stout championships in the same calendar year gives travelers who wish to race a full season at Homestead Karting more choices and availability than nearly every other track across the country.
Homestead Karting is a prestigious facility that has hosted a wide range of high competition level events, and remains the most popular karting track in the entire southeast United States. Many drivers have come from all over the world not only to drive this famous facility, but also to compete in the South Florida Rotax Max Challenge. The list of highly ranked karting drivers is long and continuous, as is the number of professional drivers have competed at Homestead Karting, including the late Dan Wheldon, AJ Allmendinger, Helio Castroneves, Juan Pablo Montoya, Marco Andretti, Rafael Matos, Sebastian Saavedra, Jordan and Ricky Taylor, among others.
The Spring 2012 champions are as follows: Daniel Roeper (Senior Max), Christian Amongero (Masters Max), Thomas Issa (Junior Max), Christian Cole (Mini Max), and David Morales (Micro Max). The Fall 2012 championship is currently taking place with the first two rounds in the books. The following drivers are leading the title chase: Kevin Barbesino (Senior Max), Javier Gonzalez (Masters Max), Austin Garrison (Junior Max), Javier Gonzalez (Mini Max), and Harry Coulton (Micro Max). The series has also created the Micro Max Novice category, separating those drivers who are just entering the sport from the more experienced drivers who race nationally.
The South Florida Rotax Max Challenge will complete the 2012 season with two more weekends, including three rounds of racing. October 27-28 is up next for rounds three and four of the Fall Championship with the series finale scheduled for December 2.
