| eKartingNews.com Driver Rankings – September 24, 2012 – TaG |
| |
Following the Stock Moto Driver Rankings from yesterday (Link), today is this month’s release of the eKartingNews.com TaG Driver Rankings. The upper portion of the TaG standings saw some shake-up with the loss of results from last year’s September month and the addition of this year’s events. The World Karting Association completed its sixth and final Manufacturers Cup Series event of the season, welcoming over 30 drivers both days and the Pan American Challenge Championship event replacing last year’s results. The top spot remains unchanged however as Texan Mason Chelootz continues to set the bar for TaG drivers across the country.
Chelootz (Top Kart) improved his score by just three points, replacing a victory from last year’s WKA New Castle event with a runner-up this year. Mason also clinched the Parilla Leopard His lead shrunk just a couple of points as Robert Bujdoso (PCR) moved back to second with two top-three results in New Castle. Bujdoso wrapped up his third straight TaG 2 championship, missing out a third straight in TaG 1. Phil DeLaO (Top Kart) added a big win to his resume, scoring the victory at the recent Pan American Challenge event. He improved his score by 15 points and remains third in the standings. Dropping two positions is current Rotax Grand Nationals champion Daniel Formal (Tony Kart) with the loss of his Pan American podium finish a year ago. Chris Wehrheim (Top Kart) remains fifth, unable to improve his score from his results in New Castle. The top-five are currently separated by just 101 points.
Former number one driver Sam Beasley (Arrow) also improved his score in New Castle, but was unable to move out of the sixth position. Tommy Andersen (Kosmic) scored victory at the WKA event to secure the TaG 1 championship, ending Bujdoso’s two year run as champion. The victory also jumped Andersen up to the seventh position in the rankings. New California ProKart Challenge champion Matt Johnson (Energy) moved down to eighth despite a victory at the recent Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix to secure his new title. One of the newest members to the 2012 Team USA roster for the Rotax Grand Finals is California pilot Louie Pagano (Birel). Placing second to DeLaO, Pagano was awarded the ticket to Portugal as DeLaO had already earned a trip thanks to his Challenge of the Americas title. Pagano’s runner-up also moved up back into the top-10, sitting ninth. Also moving into the top-10 for the first time is Florida driver Jonathan Kotyk (Tony Kart). An eighth at the Rotax Grand Nationals and top-seven finishes at the last WKA round contribute to his progression up the standings.

Team Top Kart USA driver Chelootz continues to set the bar for TaG racers across the country. The second half of the season has been up and down after a solid first half of the year. The final three WKA events were hit and miss, battling a rib injury, but still came away with some victories, and earned the Parilla Leopard championship trophy. He added two Rock trophies to his mantel, winning at the Rock Island Grand Prix. Now, Chelootz will focus on one more title not yet on his resume, a SKUSA SuperNationals victory.

Los Angeles, California

Buddy Rice Karting driver John Wallace III has the heart and determination of most championship caliber drivers. Racing luck has just not been on the side of the 18-year old. An up-and-down campaign in DD2 for the Challenge of the Americas brought him back to the Senior Max category, where he showed well at his home track CalSpeed. With a limited schedule, Wallace has shown speed, but has not converted it to high results on the national scene, until now. At the recent Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix, Wallace was unable to break into the top-10 until the main event, driving from 12th on the grid to a fifth place finish to help him move up to 40th in the EKN Driver Rankings.

EKN Driver Rankings Calculation Process
The EKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in major North American races. Assembled using events from the previous 12 months from the current date, we use a driver’s best seven finishes in TaG and six in Stock Moto to determine their overall current point total. With each new release, results posted from more than one year ago are discarded. To deliver our ranking list, we tabulate the results of all the national programs and selected regional programs. We have included the results for the major one-off events such as the SKUSA SuperNationals, the US Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals, the Rock Island Grand Prix and the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix.
Each race is initially weighted based on the prestige and history of the event or series with a score of ten (10) being the highest attainable base ranking. For 2012, the SKUSA SuperNationals and US Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals receive a score of 10 in their initial weighting in the TaG category while the SuperNationals is the lone event in the Stock Moto division. The SKUSA Pro Tour series events draw a base ranking of nine (9), while the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup, Florida Winter Tour, Challenge of the Americas, IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals, Rotax Pan American Challenge and other regional program races were given a base ranking of either eight (8) or nine (9).
The EKN staff reserves the right to adjust the rankings of each event throughout the year. A minimum entry total for any events considered for the Driver Rankings program is five (5). If an event does not have at least five (5) drivers starting the race, those results will not be tabulated toward the Driver Rankings.
Added to these initial rankings are two variables that help confirm the true importance of an event to the ranking process – field size and field strength. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, while the number of existing top 50 drivers entered offers another full point or fraction of a point. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race. Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best seven races in TaG, six for Stock Moto, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking. |
