| Industry News: Comet Racing Engines Win 7 Eagles at the WKA Grand Nationals |
| |
Comet Racing Engines were on "home turf" for the sixth and final round of the 2012 WKA Manufacturers Cup season. With New Castle Motorsports Park only a 30 minute drive from Comet Racing Engines home base in Greenfield, Indiana, expectations were high going into the event and the weekend didn't disappoint!
Komet Senior Lite and Heavy has been very kind to Comet Racing Engines drivers Mason Chelootz and Jake Donald this season. Chelootz on his Top Kart had already clinched both championships at the previous race weekend so this weekend was all about winning the race! Jake Donald would continue his winning ways with the victory in both Komet Senior Lite and Heavy. Jake really ended the second half of the season strong in his first year of Senior racing and has established himself as a major threat for 2013.
Yamaha Junior Lite started out well for Comet Racing Engines with Kyle Kirkwood taking the pole on his Arrow X1-E. In the final Arrow driver Derek Dignan came out of the gate strong running in the top three the entire race. Derek has emerged as a top runner the last few nationals and it was a matter of when and not if he would get that first WKA National win. Derek made his move with one lap to go and crossed the stripe in the lead to claim his first WKA win and take home the Grand National Eagle! Fellow Comet Racing Engines driver and Indiana native Kyle Tilley was 3rd with Skylar Robinson 5th, Ashley Rogero 6th, Sam Cate 7th and pole sitter Kirkwood in 9th.
Zach Holden earned the pole for Komet Sportsman on his Arrow Sportsman chassis and Comet KPV. Holden went back and forth in the prefinal for the lead and ended up second which is where he would start for the final. Zach, who won the KPV Sportsman final last month at Norway would hold on to take his second win in the class in a row!
Parilla Leopard was a wild finish with the Top 3 coming together in the final corner which allowed Colton Ramsey with his Comet Leopard to take the victory! Jacob Donald was 4th on his Arrow X2 with Comet Leopard, Billy Lewis followed Donald across the line for 5th and Michael Goodyear in 8th.
Yamaha Supercan Lite was another wild race, Billy Lewis on Comet's new low-cost Eagle chassis led most of the final and was leading coming through the final corner before contact sent him and the other two leading karts wide which allowed the 4th place kart of Sam Beasley on his Arrow X2 with Comet Yamaha to take the victory! Colton Ramsey was 4th and Billy, after recovering from the contact, would cross the line in 6th. Sam and Billy were both running Patriot Two Disk clutches.
Lewis once again raced his way to the front of the pack in Yamaha Supercan Heavy and just like the Lite race the day before, Billy was in the lead on his US built Comet Eagle coming into the final corner. Unfortunately contact again sent him off the track and he crossed the line in 5th.
Yamaha Sportsman Final 1 was a good showing for Zach Holden on his Arrow Sportsman chassis and Comet KT100 taking second place and missing the victory by mere inches. Simon Sikes on his Arrow Junior kart would finish 10th.
Cadet Final 1 was a great result for local driver Michael Cruz who was shuffled late in the race back to 7th but clawed his way back through the pack to finish 3rd with his Comet K80 and Garrett Moran crossed the line in 9th.
Komet Junior Lite seen Ashley Rogero take the victory on her Tony Kart EVRR and Comet KPV but she was found to be 3 pounds light at the scales. Arrow X2 driver Kyle Kirkwood was 4th and Kyle Tilley was 8th. Komet Junior Heavy seen Ashley finish 5th, Derek Dignan 6th, Kyle Kirkwood 8th and local driver Sam Cate in 9th.
Another local driver, Mark Fineis, had his best qualifying result ever in the Yamaha Rookie Final 2 starting the prefinal in second. In the final Fineis would finish 10th and Madison Campeau 11th. The previous day seen Campeau finish 6th and Fineis in 10th with their Comet Yamaha's.
Tag Final 2 was a great race for Jacob Donald who took the win on his Arrow X2 with Comet Leopard engine but it was a short lived victory when Donald was disqualified for a broken rear bumper at the scales after the race. Donald finished 5th in TaG Final 1 the first day.
Yamaha Junior Heavy was a great race with local driver Sam Cate with his Comet Yamaha in the mix all day long starting out with a pole run! Cate would go on to win the prefinal which would put him first to start the final. After the dust had settled Ashley Rogero took the victory with Sam Cate finishing right on her bumper in 2nd and Derek Dignan in 6th with their Comet Yamahas. Ashley won using a Patriot Two Disk clutch.
That wraps up the 2012 WKA season for Comet Racing Engines. It was a great season with over 30 Final wins and numerous championships. Brandon Jenkins of Comet Racing Engines said "I'm really proud of the season we have had. All the hard work we put in on the shop side and all the hard work all of our customers have put in at the track has made the season a success." Brandon continued, "I'm looking forward to the break before Daytona so we can hit the dyno and test track hard and make 2013 even better!".
