This past weekend the fifth round of the California Pro Kart Challenge was held at the newly re-opened Santa Maria Kart Track. Due to the facility recently re-opening, testing was limited and chassis setup would be the key for success. Coming home with a win and three podiums, DR Racing Kart USA drivers were in great form despite the limited track time.

In the TaG Sr category Austin Dement running his J90 DR Kart struggled to gain confidence on the difficult circuit. Dement made gains each session on track as him and Phil Carlson, DR Racing Kart USA Tuner, were able to get the chassis closer to the optimal setup. Qualifying 11th only three tenths of a second off the pole, Dement went on to scoring seventh and 10th place finishes in his two heat races. While running well Austin’s race was cut short by a mechanical failure.

In the S2 category, Michael Lieb aboard his M92 KZ chassis was strong from the get go. Placing himself second in class and fourth overall in qualifying Lieb felt he had a strong chance at a podium spot at the end of the day. Finishing second in class and fourth overall again in the first heat, big changes were made on his M92 to adapt to the changing track conditions. These changes paid off as Lieb was able to pilot his way to an impressive overall victory in the second heat. In his final event of the day Lieb fell back to third early on, eventually finishing second in class and fourth overall, solidifying his second place in the points championship.

TaG Jr featured young talent Colton Herta behind the wheel of his S97 DR Kart. Herta ran very strong all weekend, consistently towards the top of the time sheets. Herta would claim the pole position in qualifying turning a lap of 48.727. Heat one would test the young drivers patience as he was involved in a lap two incident with another driver. Coming from the back of the pack and dicing his way through the field Herta would finish sixth. In heat two from the green flag Herta was on the attack, making calculated maneuvers securing him in the second position as the white flag flew. With an impressive pass for the lead, Herta would finish the race with the win earning him pole position for the main event. Herta would go on leading flag to flag edging out his competitors by six tenths of a second across the line, all while securing the 10 bonus points for fast time.

In one of the most competitive categories out there, TaG Cadet did not disappoint. Team DR Racing Kart USA driver Anthony Sawyer looked to close in on the championship leader heading into the final round. Qualifying second and posting another two second place finishes in his heat races Sawyer would have to dig deep to step on top of the podium in the main event. After a bad start falling back to fourth, Sawyer clawed his way back up to second by the end of the fourth lap. However, Sawyer was only able to match the pace of the leader, keeping the gap constant. Both drivers drove a solid race and second was all Sawyer could manage on this day.

“I’m proud of my guys this weekend, from the tuners to the drivers to the parents,” said Phil Carlson, Owner of DR Racing Kart USA. “We showed we can consistently finish on the podium and battle for race wins. This weekend brought a lot of confidence in the team and that’s a great thing going into the Lancaster Grand Prix and SuperNationals this November.”

Going into the final round in just three weeks’ time DR Racing Kart USA drivers look to find themselves on top at the Lancaster Grand Prix. With Colton Herta and Anthony Sawyer still in the hunt for the championship, anything could happen on the narrow city streets.
