After months of dedication and countless hours at the race track, the hard work put in by Nicholas Brueckner and his crew paid off with success at the United States Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals. The Michiana Raceway Park was the site of the 2012 national championship, contested over a week filled with changing weather conditions and tough competition in the Micro Max category. Brueckner was up to the challenge and broke through on the final day of competition to secure the main event victory, adding the Rotax Grand Nationals title to his early racing resume.
The Texan, piloting a Kosmic kart prepared by Tony Tesoro, was among the contenders early on in the week during practice. Rain hit prior to qualifying and Brueckner navigated the wet conditions as best as he could, placing eighth to grid outside row four for each of the three heat races. Learning about the conditions and making the right adjustments, Nicholas drove to fifth in the opening race, posting the fast lap in the process. The following day brought on dry conditions and Brueckner shined once again. Up to fourth after the opening lap, he knifed his way to the lead by the end of lap nine, securing the position to the checkered flag for the win. Unable to gain as many position at the start of the third heat, the 11-year old still worked his way forward in the 10-lap run to end up third.
His results placed him off-pole for the start of the Prefinal, losing out on the pole position by just three positions from the qualifying session. Wet weather rolled in once again Saturday morning with Brueckner ready for the challenge. Leading the first half of the race, he diced for the lead in the closing laps to come up just short of the race win to remain outside row one for the start of the main event. Nicholas led for the majority of the 18-lap feature race, but was challenged heavily in the final few laps. Taking the white flag in the second position, Brueckner dove for the lead in turn one and came out with the spot. Running his fastest lap of the race in the final circuit, Brueckner drove out to a two tenths advantage at the checkered flag to secure the Rotax Grand Nationals victory.
Nicholas would like to thank his family and friends for their support, team manager Tony Tesoro, mechanic Darcy Marotta, and his current sponsors that helped guide him to the Rotax Grand Nationals title in 2012; Kosmic Racing Karts, Jose Castro at CMW Engines, and Enterprise Products Company.
