Daniel Pearcy found domination much to his liking as he rolled to a commanding half-lap victory in the reincarnated Little Detroit Grand Prix in the streets of Connersville (IN) in the Junior 2 (Supercan) class of the Southern Indiana Racing Association’s Midwest Championship Series, presented by Carbonix.
The 14-year-old native of Shelbyville (KY) won the heat on Saturday and started on the pole of the 15-lap finale on the eight-turn street course. At the drop of the green, however, Tyler Sawyer rocketed into the lead from his third spot with Pearcy following closely behind in second. Pearcy needed just one lap to overtake Sawyer, diving underneath him exiting turn eight and coming under flagman Tony Weiske’s green flag on top.
From there, Pearcy and his Jim Howe Motorsports Birel rolled while arch-rival Miranda Gallagher struggled to get past Sawyer. By the checkered, Pearcy was a half-lap ahead of Sawyer, Gallagher (Team Rocket Chicken Top Kart), and Levi Simpson (Team Rocket Chicken Birel). When Sawyer’s No. 23 weighed light in post-race tech, Gallagher and Simpson were promoted to second and third, respectively.
“I felt the kart get tight toward the end,” Pearcy commented during tech inspection later, “and had to alter my line, especially in turns five, six, seven and eight.” “If Daniel altered his line,” team owner Jim Howe (Columbus, IN) added, “it sure didn’t show on the clock because he actually turned his fastest lap just two laps from the end. He was incredibly consistent and fast.”
In preliminary action on Saturday, Pearcy and his No. 62 topped the ten-lap heat with a ten-kart length win over Gallagher, Sawyer, and Simpson.
Karts returned to Connersville for the Little Detroit Grand Prix after a 14-year absence. The victory was Pearcy’s fourth in eight starts this year, equaling his win total for all of 2011.
Pearcy and the JHM team have no time to rest with a return to Whiteland (IN) Raceway Park July 14 for an exciting Saturday night show with the Chainbreakers club. Two of his 2012 victories have come at WRP’s half-mile road course under the lights. |
