The 2012 KartSport Komet Throwdown event is just around the corner and is boasting a large prize package and strong participation numbers. Last year Jimmy Clark was able to hold off Cal Stewart and pocket the $500 winner’s purse along with the sword trophy.

This year’s edition is again paired up with the successful Route 66 Sprint Series based in the midwest. Concept Haulers Motor Speedway in Norway, IL is the host for the July 28th event. The KartSport Komet Throwdown features the Komet Piston Port Spec engine package with WKA rules. The weight selected will again be 350 lbs to accommodate a wider variety of drivers and the spec tire will be the Bridgestone YLC compound. Both the new style and old style clutches will be allowed as long as they pass the 5000 rpm clutch slip test. Last year’s event saw 27 drivers battle for the coveted sword trophy as well as cash prizes. For 2012, cash, Komet product certificates and Bridgestone tires are currently up for grabs. The entry fee is $75 if post-marked by the pre-entry deadline of July 13th and $100 after the deadline.

The 2012 Throwdown will use a similar format as last year beginning with an open practice session following Saturday’s Route 66 class finals. The practice session will be followed by a 10 minute open qualifying session allowing for stops and adjustments to be made. There will be a top-qualifier dash which will see the top six qualifiers battle in a short race for a set of Bridgestone YLC tires. The dash will be followed by the 25 lap main event running under the lights.

Not only will drivers be competing for prizes but chassis distributors as well as engine builders can get in on the action as well with an engine & chassis challenge division. The more participants in the challenge divisions, the greater the return for builders and distributors/manufacturers. Spots are available until qualifying begins in the chassis and engine builders challenge division.

A special thanks goes out to current event contributors: KartSport, Route 66 Sprint Series, Marx Fireplaces & Lighting, Franklin Motorsports, Bridgestone Tires, Margay Racing Chassis and Merlin Racing Chassis.
