With 2 races remaining, the 2012 South Florida Rotax Championship was up for grabs for two drivers in the Mini Max class. Christian Cole and Augusto Soto-Schirripa were each in position to take the Championship.
On Saturday Augusto would qualify on pole with Christian less then 2 tenths off in 3rd . Augusto would continue to set the pace as Christian would move into 2nd in the pre final race. In the final race Augusto would continue to lead the pace and would take the win while Christian finished in 2nd.
As Sunday approached Christian held onto a slim lead in the Championship over Augusto and could not afford to finish behind him again. With Augusto being so strong on his Home track in Homestead, FL Christian would have to find some time to have a chance at the Championship. After reviewing the race and engine data from the Unipro data logger with Jake and Ryan from Andersen Racing, Christian could see areas where there was potential to improve his lap times. Christian immediately saw the benefits in morning practice setting the fastest time in both sessions.
With the focus now on qualifying Christian would set pole position. Christian would go on to finish 1st in both the pre final and final race leading all 20 laps on his way to the Rotax Mini Max championship.
Christian’s father Rodney added “Winning at Homestead is extremely difficult. There are always drivers from other countries there and they are all fast. Everyone has strong engines so you have to out drive them you can’t just out motor them. On Saturday Augusto set pole position and won both races wire to wire. On Sunday Christian made some adjustments in his driving and he set pole position and won both races wire to wire. It was an exciting weekend of racing”.
I would really like to thank Tony and Ben from Supertune engines. Our engine ran great all weekend. I would also like to thank Jake and Ryan from Andersen Racing. Andersen Racing provided Christian with a new Birel C28 to race for them and it was strong all weekend.
Christian added” It was a challenging weekend. The team had to make allot of changes to the kart so I could fit into it better. I’m too tall for the C28 but they have done a good job of making me as comfortable as possible. I really wanted to win on Saturday but Augusto was too fast. Our fastest laps were almost identical to his but his consistency was very good. On Saturday night we reviewed the data from our Unipro and saw areas where I could perhaps gain some time. The Andersen Racing team did a great job of helping me identify these areas and it worked on Sunday. To set pole position and win both races on Sunday was great. I had to finish in front of Augusto to win the Championship but my dad told me to just go win the race and we won’t have to worry about counting points. That’s what I tried to do and it worked. Our Supertune engine was really strong as always and our new Birel C28 handled great. I would like to thank my team Andersen Racing for all of their support.”
As I prepare for next months Rotax Nationals in Indiana I really want to thank my sponsors TCB Products and Global Components for their support. None of this would be possible without their help and support.
