| eKartingNews.com Driver Rankings – June 25, 2012 – TaG |
| |
Completing this month’s release of the EKN Driver Rankings is the TaG standings. The past month did not produce a major impact on the rankings as the top-10 remain with some adjustments to the running order. Things will heat up as the weather warms up across the country with a number of big events scheduled for the second half of the season. The top of the list remains the same; however, as Texan Mason Chelootz retains the number one spot for the month of June.
Not much has changed over the past month in the TaG Driver Rankings as Chelootz (Top Kart) continues to hold the number one position. With no additional races added to his total, he remains in the lead over multi-time WKA champion Robert Bujdoso (PCR). The gap is still a slim 14-point margin with both looking to earn the next win or wins at the WKA Manufacturers Cup Series event in South Bend on July 7-8. Current SKUSA Pro Tour TaG Senior championship leader Phil DeLaO (Top Kart) moved to third in the order thanks to former number one driver Sam Beasley (Arrow) losing 110 points off his total. DeLaO is sure to add to his total and have a chance at possible stealing the number one position away after the SKUSA SummerNationals on July 21-22 should he match is results from the SpringNats.
Moving up the order are defending Rotax Grand Nationals champion Nick Neri (Tony Kart) and Kiel Spaulding (FA Kart). Both advanced without a change in their total as 2010 EKN TaG Driver Rankings number one driver Daniel Formal also loses results from his total. Neri has been moving up the EKN Stock Moto Driver Rankings thanks to his four wins in the Florida Karting Championship Series. Formal has been busy in Europe, competing in the KZ2 category with Ward Racing in the WSK Euro Series.
The final three in the top-10 remain unchanged as well with Louie Pagano (Birel), Chris Wehrheim (Top Kart) and Matt Johnson (Energy) sitting eighth thru tenth. Johnson, the current championship leader in the California ProKart Challenge program added another podium finish to his credit and gained 15 points to his total from May’s results. With a heavy schedule upcoming, the end of July release of the EKN Driver Rankings will most-likely see a number of changes in the top-10 and below. The ‘Ironman’ award goes out to William Owen (Arrow) as the Colorado driver has recorded 30 feature races toward the rankings in the past 12 months, and I’m sure there are more to that.

TaG #1 - Mason Chelootz
Spring, Texas
The current hot driver in the TaG categories is Mason Chelootz. The Team Top Kart USA driver has the results to back up his case, coming off a double win weekend at the WKA Manufacturers Cup Series event in Pittsburgh. With a month off, Chelootz will look to carry the momentum into South Bend in July and look to knock off Robert Bujdoso off the top of the series standings both days. The Texan is also penciled in to compete at the SKUSA SummerNationals, where he will face another solid field of drivers and have a chance to improve on his score.

TaG ‘ON THE MOVE’ - Mason Daughters - #25
Polo, Missouri
A number of ‘young guns’ have been making statements in their rookie seasons when jumping up to the TaG level. Mason Daughters has added his name to that list following his big victory at the California ProKart Challenge event in Buttonwillow this past weekend. In just six months, Daughters has gone from Junior racer to #25 in the EKN Driver Rankings. A solid weekend at the SKUSA Pro Tour SpringNationals has helped his cause immensely, as does working with one of the top karters from the past two decades…Phil Giebler of Phil Giebler Racing. Another top-10 performance at the upcoming SummerNats could see Daughters move up even further thanks to the confidence of his first victory.

EKN Driver Rankings Calculation Process
The EKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in major North American races. Assembled using events from the previous 12 months from the current date, we use a driver’s best seven finishes in TaG and six in Stock Moto to determine their overall current point total. With each new release, results posted from more than one year ago are discarded. To deliver our ranking list, we tabulate the results of all the national programs and selected regional programs. We have included the results for the major one-off events such as the SKUSA SuperNationals, the US Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals, the Rock Island Grand Prix and the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix.
Each race is initially weighted based on the prestige and history of the event or series with a score of ten (10) being the highest attainable base ranking. For 2012, the SKUSA SuperNationals and US Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals receive a score of 10 in their initial weighting in the TaG category while the SuperNationals is the lone event in the Stock Moto division. The SKUSA Pro Tour series events draw a base ranking of nine (9), while the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup, Florida Winter Tour, Challenge of the Americas, IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals, Rotax Pan American Challenge and other regional program races were given a base ranking of either eight (8) or nine (9).
The EKN staff reserves the right to adjust the rankings of each event throughout the year. A minimum entry total for any events considered for the Driver Rankings program is five (5). If an event does not have at least five (5) drivers starting the race, those results will not be tabulated toward the Driver Rankings.
Added to these initial rankings are two variables that help confirm the true importance of an event to the ranking process – field size and field strength. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, while the number of existing top 50 drivers entered offers another full point or fraction of a point. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race. Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best seven races in TaG, six for Stock Moto, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking.
