| MKP/Honda Promotes Karting at Indy 500 |

 | | Karting was put in front of Indy 500 fans thanks to MKP and Honda |
A Honda powered shifter kart provided by MKP Karting was featured prominently in a display at the Indy Fan Village at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the week leading to the Indianapolis 500 mile race. The Fan Village featured numerous displays from companies related to auto racing and the Indy 500.
The Honda display featured several race vehicles including a 2-seat Indy Car, a Quarter Midget, a Formula F and a Formula Atlantic car along with a prototype of a new American built shifter chassis called the Victory Kart. The idea was to feature grassroots motorsports vehicles from members of Honda’s Racing Line program.
The display was open Wednesday through Sunday of race week with thousands of spectators visiting the free event. Each of the vehicles on display had a sign banner giving the basic specifications of the vehicle and its class. According to Steve Mak, the display organizer, the MKP shifter kart got a great deal of attention as it was something most of the visitors could relate to and maybe afford to get into racing this way.
Many Indy 500 drivers including Tony Kanaan, James Hinchcliffe, Rubens Barrichello, EJ Viso, Joseph Newgarden, to name just a few, raced karts before reaching Indy and many still compete in karts for fun or for physical conditioning.
MKP Karting, one of the country’s largest kart shops, is developing the Victory Kart chassis. “We’re trying to build a chassis here in America that is competitive with the European brands in order to keep the costs down for the average racing family,” stated Bill McLaughlin, co-owner of MKP. “We’ve raced the 100cc chassis in a WKA race and it performed very well. We are finishing the initial development of the shifter chassis and plan to start testing it soon.” said McLaughlin. |
