WKA Road Racing Round Three This Weekend at Grattan
Article by: WKA PitBoard

The WKA Vega / TS Racing Road Racing Series driven by Mazda returns to action this weekend for the first of two Dart Kart Speedway Club-hosted nationals of the season.

The national tour makes its third of seven 2012 stops at Belding, Michigan's Grattan Raceway, a challenging 2.0-mile winding road course located just east of Grand Rapids.

This weekend's show marks the first WKA national event at Grattan since 2006. It's only the third time a WKA national has ever been held at the popular Michigan venue.

Over 40 national divisions and a host of local options will take the green flag once racing kicks off Saturday morning. Seven race groups run Saturday before six groups conclude the weekend on Sunday.

Pre-entry counts are strong for the event and officials expect another solid turnout after good showings for the Daytona Championships and Johnny Jacumin Memorial at Kershaw, S.C., in March.

Pit pass sales and parking open at 6 p.m. Thursday. Sponsors are admitted first. Gates swing open at 7 a.m. Friday, pre-tech at 8 a.m. and practice runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Announcement on rear bumper rules for CIK-style karts
To: WKA Master Tracks & Divisional/Regional Series
Subject: Rear Bumper Rules - CIK Style Karts

In the Manufacturers Cup section of its 2009 Technical Manual WKA announced that all karts with CIK style bodywork must have a rear bumper that extended "to at least the center of the rear tires as raced." This rule could be implemented by installing either tubular steel bumpers or a CIK style rear tire protection device.

The rule became effective March 1, 2009 and has been enforced at National events since that date. However, implementation of the rule at Master Tracks and in Divisional/Regional Series was deferred to allow competitors at these levels time to update their equipment.

On their April 17 conference call, the Board of Trustees agreed that competitors at Master Tracks and Divisional/Regional Series have now had adequate time to comply with this rule. However, to give some additional notice to comply, the Trustees agreed the rule would go into effect at Master Tracks and Divisional/Regional Series on December 20, 2012, the beginning of the 2013 Competition Year.

Respectfully,
Rick Dresang
WKA President
