Just a week after Canadian Lance Stroll scored his first WSK Master Series victory in Sarno, American Logan Sargeant earned another international victory to his CV as he bested the 60 Mini field at the 23rd annual Andrea Margutti Trophy. Held for the first time at the South Garda Karting facility in Lonato, Italy - the unofficial home for European karting - the event recorded a record number of entrants four the four categories (KZ2, KF2, KF3, 60 Mini) with 225 drivers from 33 different countries.
Sargeant began the event qualifying first in the 28 driver field. Going two-for-two in his heat races, Logan earned the pole position for the 10-lap Prefinal event, in which he won by three-tenths. The 10-lap Final was all Sargeant, going wire-to-wire for the victory aboard his Ward Racing Tony Kart/LKE entry. The win is his second international win in six months, scoring the Rok Cup International Final Mini Rok victory at the same facility in October 2011. Canadian/American Devlin DeFrancesco was a top-10 contender all weekend, finishing seventh in his Emilia Kart SRL Top Kart/IAME package.
Stroll backed up his victory from a week ago with another podium trip in KF3. Bouncing back from a 13th in qualifying, Stroll moved up to the top of the standings following the heat races after winning two of the four motos. A great 20-lap battle in the Prefinal ended with the Chiesa Corse Zanardi/Parilla driver coming just two-thousandths of a second short of the win. The battle continued through the 20-lap Final with Stroll placing second, recording the fast lap of the race. American Dalton Sargeant and Canadian Zachay Claman-DeMelo joined him in KF3. Sargeant qualified eighth, but was 14th after the heat races. After gaining two spots in the Prefinal, Dalton was involved in an opening lap wreck to be classified 33rd in his Ward Racing Tony Kart/Vortex entry. Claman-DeMelo made his first ever KF3 start, now racing for CRG factory team. Classified 25th after the heat races, he drove up to 17th in the Prefinal and finish 14th in the Final to end an impressive European debut.
Both Sargeant brothers, Stroll, DeFrancesco and now DeMelo will stay in Italy for the week, traveling to Castelletto di Branduzzo, Italy to the Laghi International Circuit for the final round of the WSK Master Series. Official on-track action begins Wednesday, March 28 with live timing available at the series website - wskarting.it |
