New Era for IKF Region 7 Sprint Championship Begins at Riverside March 2-4
Article by: ikfkarting-r7.com

One of the most historic karting facilities in the country will host the rejuvenation of a notable California regional program. The International Kart Federation’s Region 7 is beginning the 2012 season with new leadership and a revamped philosophy for the popular 2-Cycle Sprint Championship Series. This weekend’s event will be held at Adams Motorsports Park in Riverside - hosted by the SoCal Sprinters – and launch a seven-round series that aims to bring the prestige of two-stroke competition back to the Southern California area.

Working with a strong backing of industry supporters and the region’s top club organizations, IKF Region 7 officials will be striving to once again become the number one traveling series for the sanctioning body. Heading into the weekend, the series has 125 pre-entries, more than the total number from the opening event in 2011, and they expect that a vast number of drivers who are planning to attend have yet to enter, which could put the weekend total at around 150 or even close to the 200 mark.

The 2012 season will see a change in the way the program is offered, with Stewart Willis at the helm as Series Coordinator. Willis has assembled a solid team that includes Bob English as Race Director, Bob Phillips as Assistant Race Director/Head Flagman and the veteran John Motley as Tech Director. With seven events scheduled for the year, the format moves back to a two-day race schedule that will include an official practice day on Friday to focus on offering more track time for each individual class on race day. Saturday and Sunday will host six individual classes and the race format will now feature two heat races. Qualifying will consist of three timed laps with heat races lasting eight laps each. The fields will then grid up for a 20-lap main event.

2012 IKF Region 7 Sprint Championship Class Structure:

Saturday:

PRD Junior 2 - sponsored by RLV
TaG Senior - sponsored by Buddy Rice Karting

The IKF Region 7 Sprint Championship series will utilize Bridgestone tires for all categories. The Bridgestone YLB is dedicated to the TaG Senior class, while all other categories will run the Bridgestone YLC compound.

In addition to the number of companies that have stepped up to support the series in class sponsorship, the prize purse for the year-end awards is still growing. The latest addition to the list includes Kart Bee Kleen and Reaper Industries offering $1,000 toward the popular KPV-4 Heavy division. RLV will also be providing cash prizes for all class championships, and Reaper Apparel has donating a number of prizes as well. New race team Smokin’ Fast Motorsports will also be providing money for the PRD Senior division. More information on the rest of the prize purse will be announced as the details are confirmed.
