by George Durdin
IKF Region 4a crowned the Colorado State Sprint Champions for 2003 this past weekend at CRE Motorsports in Calhan, Colo. The event was blessed with beautiful, cool, crisp Colorado fall weather and a lot of enthusiasm.
True karting sportsmanship was the talk of the Junior I Comer class as the Ullstrom family leant a complete motor package to their number one rival after a mechanical failure that would have put Pat Rosse out of the event. Rosse of Golden, Josh Ullstrom of Peyton and Danny Christensen of Elizabeth were literally glued to each other for the entire 16 laps. The favored Ullstrom made every conceivable move to get by but to no avail. Rosse took the victory with Ullstrom and Christensen within hundredths for second and third. The victory sealed Rosse's Triple Crown at CRE and sets up his trip to Fontana, Calif., for the Stars of Tomorrow National Championships.
In the Blue Wazoom final was also a barn burner as Graham Dillon of Castle Rock, Jamie Lankford of Plattesville and Scott Christensen of Elizabeth formed a freight train for the entire 18 lap feature finishing within just a few feet of each other for the title. At the finish it was Dillon, Lankford and Christensen. Greg Johnson of Denver outlasted Rod Ebersole of Grant in the Animal four cycle class.
The Junior Rotax class was depleted by notable racers, Levi Roberts and Seth Chapa that had just completed in the recent Rotax Grand Nationals and could not make the event. "Diamond Dave Chapel" of Aurora, just back from the Grand Nationals, completed his sweep of the CRE Triple Crown by walking away from Robby Gill of Colorado Springs and Ian Layton of Manitou Springs.
The Rotax International Triple Crown was on the line as the Rotax International and Masters classes lined up for their feature. Dane Buckley of Ft. Collins, Hank Rutherford of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Don Jackson of Brighton distanced themselves from the field in the 25 lap feature. Rutherford made a spirited charge but in the end Buckley had just too much for the field. Michael Hurley of Cripple Creek was the class of the Rotax Masters class with Sana Bhatti and Dennis Dyer following in second and third. Marc Elliot of Denver was our lone TaG competitor and represented himself well by moving up through the Rotax Masters class. We expect the TaG class to grow significantly in 2004.
Alex Doman, Matt Kistler and Dale Collins put on a very spirited race for the state title through out their 25 lap feature. Kistler was within inches of Doman for most of the first 22 laps before Doman finally pulled of a comfortable margin to take the championship.
IKF’s region 4a completed a very successful 2003 season with five local racers expected to compete in the Stars of Tomorrow National Championships in Fontana, Calif. on Oct.29 – Nov 1. CRE wishes the best of luck to Pat Rosse, Ben Whetstone, James Michael Sullivan, Matt Kistler and Dale Collins!
