The EKN 2011 Chassis Preview Editorial Series was designed during this off-season to provide the karting community with a unique opportunity to become informed of the most popular and successful brands available in the North American market, all from the warmth of their home computers or mobile devices. The karting industry is by no means short on options regarding chassis selection, and our goal with this article series is to help narrow down your choices while educating the community on what exactly is offered by each manufacturer and its United States or Canadian importer/distributor.
The Italkart brand has been in the North American market for over 10 years with a successful resume in just that short amount of time. A number of victories at the coveted SKUSA SuperNationals and other highly-rated events in addition to a strong following in the Pacific Northwest regional area make Italkart one of the top brands on the continent. CRG is among the leaders in karting technology and innovation. With 11 world karting championships highlighting a long list of other titles, the CRG is a highly-coveted chassis. The brand has been successful in the United States with countless high-profile victories and championships. Five national championships in KZ and KF competition have come over the course of the last four seasons, thanks to drivers Gary Carlton, Mike Vincec and Arie Ouimet, and with help from others, the brand also earned the EKN Constructors’ Championship in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Over the past number of years, Top Kart has been among the group at the top of the United States market, thanks to the years of work and development over the course of the last decade. Known early on for their dominance in the Junior and Cadet levels of America, Top Kart has emerged as a one of the top full-line brands in the country. Top Kart won the 2009 EKN Constructors’ Championship thanks to a solid national campaign, capping the season by adding TaG Senior, S5 Stock Moto Junior and TaG Junior victories at the SKUSA SuperNationals in Las Vegas. In 2010, Top Kart swept the Junior championships in the CKI series (TaG Junior and KF3) and went home with the Cadet title as well. The line-up ranges from Kid Karts to all the way to the shifter models, meaning that Top Kart has a chassis to fit the needs for most karters. Full Story
The Merlin brand may not be widely known throughout the world but in the United States, ‘Merlin Nation’ is growing. Manufactured in northern Italy, the Merlin brand has been a developing brand with Dream Works Karting Supply working directly with the factory to better their product. In 2008, the brand earned its first national championship with Trent Hindman in the Cadet category. Merlin’s resume continues to mature as the brand adds more national and regional victories. Haase was created in 1991 when ’84 World Karting Champion Jorn Haase began constructing his own line of kart racing chassis. In just two years, Haase won its first Manufacturers World Championship (in Formula Super A), repeating the feat the following year. Haase now produces a full line of chassis and handles much of the component manufacturing in-house, including their own brake system. The chassis are also constructed in the Haase factory. In the United States, the brand has earned its share of victories and championships in different parts of the country over the years. Veteran karter and shop owner Mike Doty is now managing the importation of the chassis, and as a result, the Haase brand is sure to expand and gain further traction in the US karting community through a full line of models for all categories. One of the growing brands around the world is Intrepid, and it has been successful from the time it hit the States in 2003. In 2006 and 2007, Champion Racing scored EKN Team of the Year with the Intrepid brand while drivers such as Phil Giebler, Scott Jenkins, Jordy Vorrath and others have earned the brand national titles and high-profile victories. Italian company SKM manufactures the brand and components, ranked among the best in the industry. In addition to the Intrepid brand, the economical Storm brand is also available. Full Story
A branch of the OTK product family, the Kosmic Kart has established itself as one of the top chassis in the world. Since 2005, J3 Competition has been the exclusive United States distributor for the Kosmic Kart brand. In Europe the brand has grown to predominance with its recent KF2 and Super KF WSK World Cup Championships triumphs. The Kosmic brand has also found success here in North America with a national championship for the past three seasons; 2010 Rotax Junior Grand Nationals, double win at the 2010 SKUSA SuperNationals, 2009 KF3 Championship Karting International title, 2008 TaG Senior Stars of Karting national championship. Under the guidance of the J3 Competition stable, the Kosmic kart is continuing to achieve the best results possible and is expanding the brand from coast to coast. Full Story
With over 50 years of history and development, the Birel brand is among the leaders in the sport of karting. Over 25 world karting championships, in addition to numerous European and other titles, further illustrate the success achieved by the Italian manufacturer. In the United States, a number of historic figures have driven the brand, including 1978 world champion Lake Speed, Lynn Haddock, and many others. In recent years, the Cadet models of Birel have shined, gaining numerous victories and championships throughout the country. MRP Motorsport has established a strong dealership program to help further support Birel drivers all across the United States. The new Scuderia PCR name replaced the historic PCR company in early 2010 and is continuing to grow in its early rebirth stages. In addition to the PCR brand, the new company is bringing its vast experience and enhanced technology into a new era. PCR chassis has a solid history in North America and is also entering a new era in the United States market with new companies and shops behind the program. Born in the early 1970’s, the Tecno brand has earned the recognition of the world-wide karting market. The Italian brand helped establish the career of Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, earning championships for Tecno karts. Everything from the chassis to all the high-quality magnesium components are manufactured in house, with numerous technology advancements in the sport developed under the Tecno brand. Based in Ontario, Canada, Pserra Racing has become the importer for the Tecno chassis in Canada and the United States. With a solid karting background, a sound facility to call home and key personal, Pserra Racing is looking to bring the Tecno name to the pinnacle of karting in North America. Full Story
The Australian-manufactured Arrow chassis has become one of the more popular and successful brands in North America in recent years. Arrow is the reigning EKN Constructors’ Championship champ and was the chassis of the EKN Awards Team of the Year selection (BTK Motorsport/KartSport North America). The brand has garnered victories and championships in the TaG categories, especially Rotax, and 100cc Senior and Junior competition. Currently, the top two drivers in the EKN Driver Rankings compete aboard an Arrow (Sam Beasley and David Sera). Under the guidance of KartSport North America with an ever-growing dealer list and racers moving over to the Arrow brand, there is no end in site to the accomplishments that will be earned in the future. DR Racing was founded in 1996 by five-time World Karting Champion Danilo Rossi. The Italian mentored young, emerging drivers as they developed through the karting ranks. Now, DR Racing produces its own line of chassis and already has found success in Europe and North America. The brand has developed a three company distribution program throughout North America with successful and knowledgeable personal pushing the DR Racing Kart forward; DRT-Racing, DR Racing Kart USA, and TS Racing.
