SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

The 16th edition of the Rock Island Grand Prix went into the books on Sunday following the action on Labor Day weekend. The event was simply excellent with great racing, close to perfect weather and when it was all done, the event could boast that there was not one red flag. Kudos go out to the drivers for showing respect for each other on track and the volunteer staff of the RIGP who once again provided a safe track and hard-working staff that kept the event moving. Looking at the results on Sunday evening, Kyle Wiegand returned to the throne with this third King of the Streets title and another North American Street Championship victory. Making history on the day was Ohio’s Gary Lawson, as the Rock Island GP veteran added four wins on the day to move his record-breaking career win total to 20.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

The 16th annual Rock Island Grand Prix kicked off with a beautiful day for competition on the streets of the Quad Cities town. The 15 categories making up the event took to the 8/10-mile street course for two sessions of practice and qualifying - setting up for Sunday’s main events. The weather was sunny but much cooler than in year’s past with a steady breeze blowing throughout the day. When it was time for drivers to put in all their chips during the qualifying session, three drivers stood out after the Saturday afternoon sessions with Kyle Wiegand taking top honors in the coveted King of the Streets category while Arrow drivers Gary Lawson and Sam Beasley each earned three pole awards.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3

This year’s Labor Day weekend marks the 16th running of the Rock Island Grand Prix. Dubbed as the world’s largest karting street race, the city streets will close down on Friday afternoon to welcome karters from all across the country, and internationally, to the Quad Cities area located alongside the Mississippi River. Beginning at 5:00 pm local time, the streets between 16th and 18th, along with 2nd and 4th Avenue, will be transformed over a 12-hour period into a motorsports festival area, including the 8/10-mile street course that the karters will take to on Saturday morning. The two-day event will host 15 classes with over 150 karters set to battle on the fast and unpredictable course.
