Today sees the start of official track action at round 2 of the 2010 Rotax Euro Challenge being hosted for the third time in this its 7th year by the ProKart Raceland circuit at Wackersdorf in the south of Germany.
The popular return to the Bavarian region for the championship ensures that event organisers and promoters RGMMC Establishment continues to take what is currently considered by many as some of the best ‘Max’ racing in the world, to a selection of CIK-homologated locations in Europe where the drivers enjoy to race. Just short of 150 drivers will compete at this weekend’s meeting in four Rotax classes; Junior Max, Senior Max, Max Masters and the increasingly growing Rotax DD2 2-speed gearbox category.
Roland Geidel, Managing Director of RGMMC, claims it’s great to bring the Euro back to Wackersdorf once again, “The organization here in Germany at ProKart Raceland is always a pleasure to work with. Stephan Fritsch and his team provide some very impressive facilities which are realistically what we look for to host such an international event as the Euro Challenge. It’s a popular choice for our competitors that never fails to provide for some very interesting racing.”
The fast, challenging 1275m circuit built on a seven-hectare sporting complex was first opened to the public in 1997 and when combined with the amazing indoor track, becomes the ultimate racing experience of over 2km. Adding to the list of international events from the first in 1999 when they had the European ICC and FC Championship, together with the Euro Challenge in 2007/08, Raceland was also the recent choice of the CIK-FIA for an edition of the regional qualifiers for the 2010 European KF3 Championship.
Following the first round of the Euro Challenge at Salbris in France last March, the competition is extremely close coming into the sequel. If it’s anything like last year, the series may not be decided until the final event, making every point in the four-round series a crucial one. However, as Wackersdorf is well-renowned for its changing weather and likely to have a lasting effect on the results, the prediction for Friday afternoon’s official timed practice may be no exception.
The qualifying begins after lunch today [Friday] to determine race grid positions for the 18 qualifying heats on Saturday’s race program, then Sunday sees last chance eliminations and the all-important finals.
