Spain is the venue set to ‘break the ice’ at the start of a chilly European racing season, as the second Rotax Winter Cup kicks off at Karting Campillos in the south of the country this weekend.

Following the success of last year’s first ever Euro shakedown also held at the same location just north of Malaga, event organisers and promoters RGMMC Establishment are excited with the overwhelming interest in the sequel. Managing Director of the motorsport management company Roland Geidel first introduced the Winter Cup in 2009 to bridge the six month gap between the Euro Challenge races and believes the Spanish race is perfect as a season starter.

“After the response we had at the initial Winter Cup, we knew from the enquiries leading up to this season that the race was an ideal chance for drivers and teams alike to get in some early testing prior to the opening round of the Euro Challenge championship in late March. We’re looking forward once again to another fantastic meeting and some great racing in Spain!”

With a lot of new drivers making their RGMMC international debut in the Rotax event, the number of entries has increased by an impressive 50% on the previous Winter Cup. For karting itself, it can only be seen as a positive beginning to the season and the future of the sport.

As a result of the change to the CIK regulations in age restrictions for the junior classes, there are an enormous number of young drivers who are currently 12 years old participating this weekend, which undoubtedly makes it an ideal step for these “next generation” rookies.

The majority of the former Euro Challenge series’ drivers in the class have also moved up to Senior Max in the Spanish line-up. The Rotax DD2 2-speed and Max Masters categories are also part of the three day official program that follows the open practice

Considered as an extremely technically challenging circuit, the 1588m Campillos venue is for many a real drivers’ track. Nestled in the scenic Andalusia region less than an hour from the beautiful Mediterranean coastline, the chosen location combines a fast, sloping layout of long straights and hairpin corners for its premier annual international event. It’s increasingly popular now for many teams as the best place for their off-season testing in Europe.

RGMMC are taking the racing to the fans once again this year with live timing accompanied by the trackside live commentary online starting from Friday, February 12 through to Sunday’s finals. There’s also live internet TV across the weekend with interviews and track action, together with streaming videos as well.
