With the recent transition of the elite karting series positioning within North America, the eKartingNews.com staff has decided that the EKN Constructors’ Championship program will continue on in 2009 with a new, but slightly similar, format. This year’s championship calculations will include the two opening events of the Snap-on Stars of Karting Series and the four rounds of the new Championship Karting International series. It has been a very ‘interesting’ year on the national stage, and we here at EKN will be doing our best to keep our eyes on the future. Our approach to the Constructors’ Championship will follow this concept.

“The two programs have a similar weekend formats and, as a result, it was easy for the EKN Constructors’ Championship structure to make the transition as well in order to recognize the leading constructors for the 2009 season,” commented eKartingNews.com Managing Editor David Cole. “Those who perform well enough throughout the season should still be recognized even with the abrupt changes that were made at the elite level of North American karting.”

The two rounds of the Snap-on Stars of Karting were followed up by the inaugural Championship Karting International event at the New Castle Motorsports Park. Leading the way in Indiana was the Top Kart brand, which accumulated 155 points over the weekend to extend their overall lead.

Top Kart scored points in all five divisions in both the Prefinals and Finals. Team Top Kart USA drivers Taylor Miinch and Tyler Thomas each recorded a runner-up finish in the KF3 and IAME Junior features. Newly promoted EKN TaG Driver Rankings #1 one pilot Chris Wehrheim (Team Top Kart USA) ran in the KF2 division and put Top Kart on the podium with a third place run. Neil McCoy (Team PKS) barely missed out of the podium in IAME Senior with a fourth place finish, while Neil Alberico (Kartel Motorsports) ran sixth. Raquel Martinez (Team PKS) and Alex Grandahl (Kartel Motorsports) also recorded a sixth place run in the IAME Junior and KZ2 divisions. Michael Hogg (Kartel Motorsports) also added points from his Prefinal performances with the IAME Senior win and ninth in KF2.

CRG was second on the weekend, matching the score of Top Kart in the feature races, however, they were just eight points short in the prelims. Gary Carlton (SSC East) dominated the KZ2 category throughout the event, earning maximum points for CRG. Arie Ouimet (SSC East) added a second place performance in KF2 after winning the Prefinal. British driver Sennan Fielding (SSC East) recorded a KF3 third place finish in his first visit to America while privateer Camden Geise celebrated a podium run as well in IAME Junior. SSC East drivers Alex Manglass and Mark Pellegrini added fourth and fifth place finishes in the KZ2 and IAME Junior categories. Cole Mathewson (Evolution Karting) and Phil DeLaO (SSC East) contributed points for CRG with their Prefinal performances.

Kosmic and Tony Kart each scored 79 points on the weekend to tie for third at the event. Tristan DeGrand’s KF3 victory led the way for the J3 Competition squad aboard the Kosmic machines. Richard Benitez and Jeremy Nelson ran fourth and fifth in the KF2 division. Broc Yocom (Reaction Karting) added seventh in KF3 to the Kosmic total. Alex Speed ran double duty in his Wunder-Bar Racing entries for KZ2 and KF2. A second in the shifter class was his best performance as he slipped to seventh in the KF2 category. Joe Paterson (Team PBIR/Screaming Talent) slid through to gain the second step of the IAME Senior podium with privateer Michael Politis crossing in eighth. RC Enerson (Team PBIR/Screaming Talent) made his KF3 debut with an eight place run while teammate Christian Vogel ran tenth in IAME Junior. Robby Seward - another privateer - was seventh in the same feature. John Zartarian added a ninth place run in the IAME Senior Prefinal but finished just outside the top-10 in the main event.

Intrepid was just two points back from third and fourth on the weekend to round out the top-five. Leading Edge Motorsports driver Mason Marotta led the way with the victory in IAME Senior. Gregory Liefooghe earned his first podium with a third place in KZ2. Brett Felkins and Jess Peterson ran sixth and ninth in KF2 while Champion Racing’s Blake Teeter climbed up to tenth in the IAME Senior feature.

Top Kart gained only a few points over CRG to extend their lead to 71 markers. Both Kosmic and Tony Kart jumped Italkart to sit third and fourth, separated by just four points. Intrepid trails Italkart now for the fifth position by just 23 points.

EKN Constructors’ Championship
The eKartingNews.com Constructors’ Championship is calculated using only the top ten finishes in the KZ2, KF2, Senior National (IAME Senior), KF3, and Junior National (IAME Junior) divisions of the Snap-on Stars of Karting and Championship Karting International series. Each constructor will count their top two finishes in each class for both the Prefinal and Final. The points double for the Final with 20 points awarded to the first place finisher with 10 points given for a tenth place result.
