Driver of the Year
The final honor to be handed out to wrap up the eKartingNews.com Awards Week is the prestigious Driver of the Year award. Eight drivers already have their name etched in history as the top driver from their respective year and Gary Carlton is the only person to win the award on two occasions, being honored on consecutive years. For 2008, there was only one driver who put together the complete package of on-track performance, off-track professionalism, and an all-around positive personality that promotes the sport of karting. That name would be Michael Vincec.

Event of the Year
New to the eKartingNews.com Awards in 2008 is the ‘Event of the Year’ category. Like the EKN Awards program itself, this new honor has been re-kindled from the pages of Super Kart Illustrated as in the past, the magazine’s staff would list their selections of the top-10 events of the previous year. Now positioned as part of the EKN Awards, the site’s viewers submitted their favorite events and the top-five were then awarded a nomination. After long discussions among the website’s staff, the National Guard SKUSA SuperNationals XII has earned the honor of being named the inaugural winner of the award.

Mechanic of the Year
Success on the track is attributed to not only what you do on behind the wheel, but also back in the paddock and at home before heading to the track. There’s just as much work to be done off the track as there is on the racing surface. For many in the sport, the driver and the mechanic are in fact the same person, working seamlessly to produce the desired results. At the upper echelon of the sport, drivers work with their ‘right-hand man’ to make sure they both enjoy the spoils of victory. The EKN Mechanic of the Year category was added to the eKartingNews.com Awards in 2000 to help promote those who stand behind the success of their drivers. Today, there are a number of persons who work endless hours to help put their driver or drivers to the front of the field each weekend and EKN is proud to recognize Trevor Wickens as the Mechanic of the Year for 2008.

Rising Star
The Rising Star Award is the second of the four original categories to be handed out during this year’s eKartingNews.com Awards Week. When the award program was established in 1999, this category highlighted the up-and-coming shifter kart drivers of that time. When the awards program opened up to all forms of karting in 2005, the category expanded exponentially, making it even more difficult to narrow down the nominees and the eventual winner. The past three Rising Star award winners have gone on to big things, winning the USAC National Midget Championship, the Stars of Karting ICC National Championship, and the Skip Barber Karting Scholarship Shootout. From those accolades, you’d have to believe that the future is looking good for this year’s EKN Rising Star - Arie Ouimet.

Road Racer of the Year
The eKartingNews.com Awards Week continues today with the next award on the schedule, as we are proud to announce this year’s Road Racer of the Year. Introduced in 2001 when the program was under the Shifter Kart Illustrated Magazine banner, the award went to the top shifter kart driver of the season on the road racing circuit. When the magazine opened up its coverage in 2005, all the divisions that make up the unique branch of the sport were up for nomination. That year, the award went to karting legend Randy Fulks. This year, another veteran of the ‘enduro’ style of karting adds his name to the list as Jim Fry has earned the honor of Road Racer of the Year following his successful 2008 season.

Young Driver of the Yea - Phil DeLaO
As one of the original four categories of the program, our Young Driver of the Year presentation kicks off the eKartingNews.com Awards Week. The Young Driver honor has been awarded to a number of incredibly talented pilots over the years, competitors who have found success early in their careers and carried that momentum as they grew older. One driver that was among the most feared in the Junior ranks in 2008 was Phil DeLaO, the newest member to be added to the EKN Young Driver of the Year alumni.
