The Snap-on Stars of Karting Series is pleased to announce that IndyCar Series competitor Ed Carpenter will compete with Position One Motorsports aboard an Avanti chassis in the Masters division at the 2008 Performance Racing Industry (PRI) All-Stars Karting Classic. Taking place on December 11th adjacent to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, Carpenter will join karting pilots Luis Martinez, Airel Jaminez and Nick Defazio.
“Position One Motorsports is another new team to enter the All-Stars Karting Classic,” stated Stars of Karting President Paul Zalud. “This event is continuing to grow with the addition of new teams and drivers. With the television package that we have put together and all the events scheduled throughout the day of December 11, this year’s event will be sure to generate some media buzz around the sport of karting.”
Driving the Menards sponsored car for Vision Racing in 2008, Indiana resident Carpenter scored seven top ten results and two top five finishes this past season. Making his IndyCar Series debut in 2003 with PDM Racing, Carpenter was the first ever driver to compete in an Indy Pro Series (now Indy Lights) and an IndyCar Series race on the same weekend as he did that weekend at the Chicagoland Speedway.
Carpenter will race in the Masters division at the All-Stars Karting Classic and will be joined by Karter division teammates Luis Martinez, Airel Jimenez and Nick Defazio aboard Parilla Leopard powered Avanti chassis.
Martinez, who was an avid karter and International Karting Federation national champion in 2005, competed in Formula TR 1600 in ’06 and ’07 where he finished third in the series championship. In 2008, Martinez graduated to the Super Late Model at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale where he finished ninth in series points.
“Although I have been out of karting as a full time driver for a while, I have never left the sport entirely,” explained an excited Martinez. “I am looking forward to this race as I will be racing with some of the best drivers in karting."
Joining Martinez will be Airel Jimenez, who has competed in several West coast karting series in previous seasons. "I feel very confident going into this race in my Position One Motorsports and Avanti,” stated Jimenez. “We have been testing for this race for a couple months now and I know we will finish up front."
"I’m excited to get back into a kart, especially with a team that has had so much success in recent years,” stated Nick Defazio who has been away from kart racing for a few seasons. “Testing went well and I put a lot of laps down. I think I should be able do very well in this race."
Defazio is no stranger to motorsports as he is the current spotter and mechanic on the Mobil 1 Penske Racing #77 driven by NASCAR star Sam Hornish Jr. Defazio, a racer himself back in the 90’s, competed in several high profile karting events scoring many race wins and championships along the way. Defazio then moved to the world of car racing competing in Late Model action.
Ed Carpenter will join Michael Valiante, Will Power, Marco Andretti, Antron Brown, AJ Allmendinger, Max Papis, Cristiano Da Matta, Oswaldo Negri, Buddy Rice, Scott Speed, Townsend Bell, Jamie McMurray, Nelson Phillipe, Jan Heylen and Ryan Hunter-Reay in the Masters division. A series of further driver announcements are forthcoming for this prestigious event.
