SUNDAY, AUGUST 3

Finally, the last day of racing at the Wayne Brown Memorial IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals. Somehow no matter how good or bad an event is you are always so glad to pack up and head home after the last checkered flag. Today was one of those days. Many of the teams had been in Santa Maria for over a week and though the weather was perfect, the racing good, and the event a success it is always nice to know you will be sleeping in your own bed soon.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2

Three down and one day to go for Joey Licata Jr. and Taylor Miinch at the 2008 Wayne Brown Memorial IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals at the Santa Maria Kart Track in Santa Maria, California. With only four Duffy’s up for grabs today it was no surprise that the standout senior and junior drivers continue to bring in the bronze. Licata and Miinch both added another win to their already impressive trophy count today as Ty Matta brought home his first Grand National title. Zane Smith was the other winner on the day in a controversial finish to the Rookie Sportsman class.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 1

Day two of the IKF Wayne Brown Memorial 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals was the longest day of the entire event with five classes (plus Kid Karts). Tech was a little more thorough tonight, but in the end it is always worth a wait to make sure everyone is playing fair. Today was a big day on and off the track. Excitement was finally in the air. I think the Grands have been missing this spark for a few years now. It isn’t like the days ten years ago with 500 entries and tension so think you could cut it with a knife. I’m sure a decade ago people were saying the same thing about my generation of karters too. Today gave me hope for the future. People cared enough today to get in near fist fights in the pits. Race officials cared enough to eject two people from the event. I don’t condone fighting, I don’t support be thrown out of races for your conduct, but I love it for the fact that a Duffy is still important to fight for. I love that in a karting world vaster, more diverse, and deluded with series then we could have ever imagined that a little bronze man still carries weight.

THURSDAY, JULY 31

You know summer is upon us when racing is happening all over the country every weekend. You see the same guys week in and week out, but it is never in the same place. The hired guns with the wrenches have it the worst moving from town to town and driver to driver. Many of the guys I just saw at WKA’s Concept Haulers Manufacturers Cup event in Norway, Illinois I also see lurking on the grid here is Santa Maria at the IKF Wayne Brown Memorial 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals. Most went home long enough to pack a different bag and catch a flight out on Monday. I was lucky enough to drive up Thursday morning for the first day of racing and just skip all the practice. Four classes were scheduled today (along with Kid Karts) and of those one race was spectacular, two of them were blowouts and one was just a waste of time.
