Since the end of the 2006 season, the CRG brand has been dominant in the EKN Constructors’ Championship. That has come to end following the performances of the Intrepid drivers this past weekend at the Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by IndyCar Series Western Division opener at the Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT. Amassing a season high 68 points, Intrepid jumped from fourth to the top position for the first time ever in the three year history of the EKN Constructors’ Championship. CRG falls one spot along with Top Kart to round out the top three.

Scoring points in 11 of 12 possible spots, earning two victories and two runner-up finishes, Intrepid USA has set the bar for the remainder of the year with their performance in Utah. Joey Wimsett was the shining star of the Champion Racing squad with double main event wins in the Stars TaG division. Wimsett was quick at the facility in 2007 and the cooler weather helped him run even faster in 2008. Canadian Jordy Vorrath was no slouch. The top qualifier in the headline ICC class recorded two-second place runs in the main events. New Champion Racing pilot Cody Jolly had an impressive first weekend aboard his new ride, earning a seventh and fourth in the two finals. Joining Wimsett in the top ten was Leading Edge Motorsports (LEM) support Troy Diede of Diede Racing, placing fifth and eighth in Stars TaG. LEM JICA contingent recorded extra points for the Intrepid brand with Brett Felkins placing seventh and tenth and Timmy Bachman sixth in the last main event.

CRG was fifth on the weekend but holds the second spot, only able to score points in the ICC division where a good percentage of the pilots are aboard the Italian-manufactured black machines. Defending ICC national champion Gary Carlton was back on his game despite an early hiccup during the weekend. The PCH Motorsports pilot recorded both main event wins as Fritz Leesmann (PSL/Kohilo Racing) and ICC rookie Jacob Neal (PCH Motorsports) recorded the brands only other points with a third and fifth respectively.

Dropping to third is the Top Kart brand. Four drivers in total scored for the Team Top Kart USA banner, supported by Kartel Motorsports. Neil McCoy doubled up in TaG with a tenth and a fourth place finish on the weekend. Chris Scribner and Chris Wehrheim added to that with fourth and fifth place runs respectively. JICA driver Brendan Phinny was on the podium twice, both on the third place step and adding a good chunk of points to the Top Kart total.

Tony Kart also fell one spot, to fourth, following a 1-2 punch in the JICA division. Phil De La O (Advanced Karting) earned his first ever Stars of Karting victory in the first main with Gustavo Menezes (Tony Kart USA) on his bumper. They would swap spots in final number two after De La O dropped a wheel and gave up the point to Menezes with just two to go.

Next to Intrepid’s performance in Utah, the G-Phactory / Sodi Racing USA team also stepped up their game with the second highest total on the weekend. With Stars TaG drivers Michael Self and Pat Iannucci recording second and third in both main events, the Sodi Kart total was tripled from Ocala. Add in the outstanding performance of Ryan Yop standing on the ICC podium in third and Nick Halen placing ninth, the Sodi Kart brand moved up four spots from ninth to fifth behind Tony Kart.

EKN Constructors' Championship - Stars of Karting
The EKN Constructors' Championship is calculated using only top ten finishes in the ICC, Stars TaG and JICA divisions. Each constructor will count their top two finishes in each class. Points will be awarded with a first place finish earning 10 points, down to a single point for a tenth place result.
