With Christmas less than 48 hours away, it’s the final minutes of shopping and also the final minutes for preparation to one of the most prestigious events in karting – WKA Daytona KartWeek. Three different events – Manufacturers Cup, Road Racing, Dirt Oval – at the same location – Daytona International Speedway.

Racers are preparing to head to sunny Florida for a chance to take part in one of the three events. EKN will be Trackside for the entire Manufacturers Cup program, including live audio at http://www.eKartingNews.com/live

Check in here for updates and of course on the EKN social media network.

Hearing of numbers upwards of 200 entries – great trend! Any updates on an entry list?

We had a paper list that was offered, which was over 215 entries I believe. They are expecting over 250 total for the event with walk-ups certain, and hopefully more. Happy Holidays.

    Hey guys,

Based on the entry sheets we have in front of us, they are 256 entries as of practice day. Pro IAME Senior tops the list with a stellar 47 entries, while LO206 Senior hit the magic 40 number. Great stuff.

I’ll be monitoring this thread all week and will be posting the top-10 finishers from all official sessions as well.

The event has great feel to it this year. Last year we had around 18 karts in Pro X30, with a few more in the Leopard class, and this year it’s 47. Tons of talent and it should be some great racing.

The X30 class is certainly enjoying a great deal of momentum, Kirt. The growth of the IAME program nationwide is helping to fuel the support of the Man Cup, as you can expect many of the drivers in this week’s field to run the SKUSA Pro Tour as well. When you have a motor that can cross over between different sanctioning bodies and series, you’ll often see growth and support.

Obviously they aren’t following the published order at the sprint track.  Is there somewhere we can find the correct order online?

Rob, Greg asked earlier, is there any way you could post road race results as well?  It would sure be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Clark Sr.

    What is a “<span style=”color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;”>pre-race grid DQ”?</span>

Also, great race coverage by the EKN crew…  keep up the good work, guy!

    Thanks,

    Clark Sr.

I wish I could, Clark, but it’s hard to keep up with the Man Cup as it is, posting results to Facebook, Twitter and this forum thread. I’m in the timing trailer at the sprint track, so I don’t have access to the immediate results, even if I could find the time. We’d have to talk to a WKA to have someone post them to their own separate forum thread, but then again, I expect they’d want to wait until tech was cleared.

It’s been a long and exciting day here at Daytona International Speedway and we are wrapped for the week. Thanks to everyone for listening to the broadcast. We’ll have the race report posted tomorrow.

Was there seriously a red flag at the end of BOTH sportsman races today at the main track?   I hope everyone is OK.

No flips in sportsman from what I remember, although we did have a flip in kid kart. Multiple flips in LO206 Senior and 1 in LO206 Junior. Rob/David can correct me if I’m wrong, as that’s just going off my memory.

Scott, I understand that Pete Michel’s son Matt took a hard ride at Daytona on the main track (The big one) and broke a number of ribs and took a bad pounding.

I also understand that he was released from the hospital the same day.

Does anyone know who the photographer was for the man cup races this week? I forgot to get a card.

Thanks, Greg.  I was afraid of that, being that I was following on Race Monitor, and he was no longer in the front pack.

    Get well soon, bud.

Glad to hear he’s ok. If this is the guy that hit the wall by Turn 3 on the big track it was behind our pit spot and a sickening sound that brought a lot of people to the fence to see what had happened.

So minor change on my post, there was a driver that flipped in Pro Swift Sportsman on Wednesday.

Also, it was Pix Studios as the official photographer Kirt.

Xander, I assume you realize that Scott Sigafoos and I are referring to the Road Race series on the big track. Sportsman is a totally different deal in roadracing being an adult class.

Do most of the members of this forum realize that the Daytona Man Cup event was the smallest of the three events going on in Daytona?

    Didn’t think so.

Does it matter? We had a great event in the infield and I trust the road guys and dirt guys did also. Do we need 3 different threads so no one gets offended?

This is something I’d truly like to get better numbers on. I’d love to see overall entry totals and actual physical competitors at each venue.

I think its hard to state that Man Cup was the ‘smallest’ without knowing the actual numbers, Greg. Otherwise, you’re just making statements based on past historical data and assumptions.

To its credit, the Man Cup race was a solid return to form for the WKA, and part of the overall swing of health in terms of Kartweek, I believe. I was told that the Dirt numbers were down a little, and that the RR was pretty much the same. Man Cup had about 260 entries each day, for a total of over 500 for the two-day event. At all three venues, you’d expect that most drivers run multiple classes. In Man Cup, however, with the new class structure, not as many people are doing that, which is interesting. I just looked at the Junior classes (LO206 Junior, Yamaha Junior and IAME Junior) and only 11 of the 27 Yamaha Junior drivers did double duty in IAME, and 1 Yamaha Junior also ran LO206 Junior. In Senior, only 6 of the 47 IAME Senior drivers drove Yamaha Senior as well. This is definitely a shift in overall numbers. I’d expect there were close to 200 individual drivers at the Man Cup race.

FYI, I just ran some numbers.  I don’t have a dog in the hunt, but I was curious, and it had come up in a couple of conversations I was having. The only way I can come up w/ #s is to count qualifiers from mylaps. I assume there might be reasons why the actual final #s might be a little different.

Man Cup had 511 entries in 20 classes.

Dirt had 652 in 40 classes.

Both of those sound great to me.  Is that fewer than they had on the dirt last year?

Roadrace had around the same as last year, (maybe 5 more or less, either way, from what I heard.) although I didn’t try to make a count from race-monitor, and nobody knows when (or if) they will ever have that info on mylaps. (me being facetious).

    Keep on kartin'. llb

Who got offended? My point was that there was lots of racing other than Man Cup at Daytona. I did a bit of casual number crunching and it appears that the RoadRace series had in the vicinity of 500 entries.

Yo Rob, I know that you couldn’t be in more than one place at a time (been there, done that) but without at least researching the final results of the other series running over Kartweek makes things seem lopsided.

Well, this is the first time we’ve been to Daytona in a couple years, so we’re already ahead of the curve. ;-) It was a unique situation, as David requested the vacation to be with his family, as we had done over the last couple of years, as I just stated. The difference this year was that he was going to actually be in Daytona as part of a cool family trip, so I wasn’t about to ask him to cover the RR side of the program. That said, our coverage isn’t done yet. I handled the Man Cup coverage and live broadcast program myself, and David and I will circle around this week to do a ‘From The Tower’ and a limited road race report.

I sometimes wonder if anyone cares that we spend 16+ hour days producing our trackside coverage, so I’m glad to read this. We’ll have something up on the site by the end of the week.

I think Roadrace events should hire some reporters and get some promotion and airtime.  It might bring more interest to that genre of the sport.  It seems like sprint racing is the only group that hires professional reporting staff.  Maybe I’m wrong, but I see and hear very little about racing on the big tracks.
