Denny Hamlin, Scott Speed, Johan Schwartz and Drew Herring all claimed victories in Round One of the RACERSITES Cup at Mooresville Motorplex (MMX). Following the ribbon cutting by the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce, 58 competitors within four karting divisions showed race fans exactly how much racing excitement is in store for the 2013 and inaugural race season at MMX.

Speed captured the win in the 25-lap feature event in the TaG Senior division. The field of 18 karts charged into turn one of the 0.7-mile sprint track, but only 11 karts made it through the difficult turn after a seven-kart pileup caused the first caution of the race.

Pole sitter, Jason Bowles, shot out to an early 10-kart lead, leaving the field to battle it out behind him. By lap seven, Hamlin began to reel in Bowles, cutting his lead nearly in half. Hamlin was able to close onto Bowles’ bumper each time the two drivers entered the infamous ‘hairpin’ turn in the middle of the track.

When the halfway flags flew, Bowles and Hamlin’s hard battle allowed the rest of the top five of Speed, Kyle Larson and Brad Sweet to close in on the leaders. With only nine laps to go, Speed made a move around Hamlin in the hairpin turn, allowing Larson to sneak past Hamlin as well. Hamlin tucked in behind Larson, but faded to fourth position.

The top three of Bowles, Speed and Larson were within a kart length of each other before Speed made a bold move to the inside of Bowles to take the lead as they crossed the start/finish line with three laps to go. Larson went on to overtake Bowles as well. Speed crossed the line in first, followed by Larson and Bowles.

Hamlin won the TaG Masters 25-lap feature event. Johan Schwartz claimed the victory in the Rental Kart League Heavy Division 20-lap feature race. Drew Herring took the win in the 20-lap Rental Kart League Lite Division feature event.
