Race Report – SoCal Oval Karters – Perris
PATTON, MORHEISER, NIGH AND McINTOSH POST SO CAL OVAL KARTERS WINS AT PERRIS!
(Camarillo, CA, August 12, 2015) Troy Patton, Danny Morheiser, Cody Nigh and Troy McIntosh posted wins in their respective divisions when the So Cal Oval Karters visited Perris Raceway for round #3 of the “Summer Shootout Series” last Saturday night.
Thankfully for the competitors, fans and crews, the weather was warm, but not scorching on Saturday and it was certainly better than the rainy night in April when the Perris races were canceled.
The largest division on hand at the dirt oval located about 60 minutes southeast of Los Angeles was the KT100’s. Eleven KT100’s were in the pits and 10 of them took the Kevin Winters’ green flag to start the main event. Cherry Valley’s Troy Patton, who earlier in the night won both of his heat races, proved to be the class of the field and led every inch of the way in the main from his pole position start. 21-year-old Tyler Wilson placed second behind the two-time 2015 winner. Third fourth went to the father and son due of “Hubcap” Mike Collins and his son Mitch Collins from Lake Forest. Rev Parker, who won the KT100 season opener at Perris in March, claimed the fifth place spot. Parker was also the KT100 Hard Charger picking up five spots in the main event.
Besides Patton, Wilson and Danny West won the other KT100 heat races.
La Verne’s Danny Morheiser set the tone for the SR 4 Cycle main event when he won the first 8-lap heat race of the night. He then came back to win the main from the front row. Bonita’s Matt Martis, who leads the division with five wins and also leads the championship point standings, was second across the stripe at the finish. Jason Voss of nearby Lake Elsinore, who has two wins this season, took third. 15-year-old Garrett Schill of Riverside ended up fourth in the main event with Camarillo’s Carly Nigh fifth.
Martis won the other SR 4 Cycle heat and Schill was the Hard Charger.
In the Open Class, new San Diego State Aztec Cody Nigh nabbed his third main event win on three different tracks in 2015. Night led every inch of the way and won with room to spare. Long Beach charger Chris Gibb, who was the only SCOK driver to get upside down on the night in his heat race, moved into second but had to pull off the track with problems before he had a chance to mount a challenge. Chad Griggs of Lakeside steered his #65 to second, with Cherry Valley’s Steve Patton third. Gibb and Norm Reynolds of San Marcos, who also dropped out early, took fourth and fifth.
Nigh and Gibb won the Open heat and Griggs was the “Hard Charger.”
Lake Elsinore’s Troy McIntosh won his second main event in two-weeks when he out-paced the F200 field in the main event. Riverside’s Justin Garcia, Scott Gaynor of Banning and Steve Julleratt of
Whittier rounded out the F200 field.
McIntosh and Garcia won the F200 heats and Garcia was the “Hard Charger.”
Youngsters Troy McIntosh Jr., Caden Kane, Tristen Jullerat, Kevin Sherman and Izzie & Illy Bezio all honed their skills and prepared for the future by getting some laps in the JrJr Class.
McIntosh (F200), Martis (SR4 Cycle), Nigh (Open) and Oxnard’s Rob Marion maintained their lead in the season long championship standings.
There are only five races left in the 2015 season for the So Cal Oval Karters. The series will be taking this Saturday and its blazing temperatures off before returning to battle at the fourth and final round of the “Summer Shootout Series” at Perris Auto Speedway on August 22nd. Gates will open at 3:00 PM and the first race will take the green flag at 6:00.
