Cincinnati television station WKRC aired a Mother’s Day story recently focused on a mother-daughter tandem that has forged a special bond through the sport of karting. Shannon Slattery and Marina Walters enjoy their weekends together at the racetrack, as a family team, carrying on the Slattery name and the passion for karting. Shannon is the daughter of Patrick Slattery – a 20-year veteran of the sport. Patrick began karting with his son Shawn Slattery in the 1990s. Shawn won a WKA national championship and the Slattery family has assisted a number of former and current Ohio karters over the years.

Walters began racing in 2008, and her mother Shannon got behind the wheel for two seasons at the club level (2009-2010) before stepping out of the seat to put 100% of her efforts into Marina’s program. Marina races at the Ohio Valley Karting Association (OVKA) and has WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series as well as a few United States Pro Kart Series events on the calendar in the Yamaha Junior category. The family’s next event is the upcoming WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series race at the end of the month in Dousman, WI.
