Checkered Motorsports – SKUSA Fikse Wheels Pro Tour SpringNationals Report
The Fikse Wheels Pro Tour SpringNationals brought extremely hot temperatures reaching triple digits in Phoenix, Arizona. An intense weekend of racing to say the least for Checkered Motorsports, fielding a pair of drivers in Stock Honda and the Iame package. The Girard, Ohio based team quickly made their presence in the west. Four PCR pilots concluded the weekend with three top five finishes, and three top ten finishes.
A veteran, but no stranger to the West coast is TaG Masters driver Chris Guimarra. Saturday’s action the New Jersey pilot qualified his PCR Mxk8 on the front row, missing the pole position by a tenth of a second. The 16 lap main event had Guimarra start in the second spot. In the opening laps, Guimarra had a comfortable second place position and slowly began to cut the gap for the first spot. His consistency and speed was not enough in the main event, coming short from victory to finish second. Unfortunately, a penalty would move the veteran into third due to jumping the start.
Sunday’s efforts looked no different for Chris Guimarra placing his PCR in third for the 10 minute qualifying run. However, the second heat race Guimarra was involved in a turn one incident forcing him to retire giving him a 14th grid spot for the main event. The 2014 Gearup F-Series champion had a phenomenal start and was in fifth by the first lap. Guimarra slowly began to be a threat to the field moving his way to fourth on lap four while posting the fastest lap of the race. Soon enough, Guimarra was in third until contact with the fourth place kart took both drivers out of contention for the win.
Phillippe Denes kept the momentum going for Checkered Motorsports in TaG Sr. Denes quickly adjusted to the grip that the high temperatures brought. The California pilot showed phenomenal speed throughout the weekend running the black and yellow colors up front. Saturday’s action Denes recorded a fourth place after starting ninth. The story of the day came on Sunday where Denes started 31st. The rookie Senior pilot drove a mistake free final passing 24 karts in just 16 laps to finish seventh.
In S2 Andrew Bujdoso was among the quickest drivers all weekend. On Saturday, the BBS powered Stock Honda and the PCR Mxk8 125 were a perfect match missing the pole position by a mere 33 thousandths of a second. The first heat race Andrew Bujdoso posted the fastest lap of the race. Unfortunately, a pass in the “Daytona Corner” for the second spot sent the 17 year old off track and was unable to continue. The second heat race older brother, Robert Bujdoso and Andrew Bujdoso, found themselves tangled in a first lap incident forcing Andrew Bujdoso for another DNF while Robert nursed the kart to a 25th place finish. The main event Robert Bujdoso’s luck did not turn around where a broken coil wire prohibited the him to continue. However, Andrew Bujdoso was on the move shuffling his way through the field to finish sixth and later moved to seventh after a penalty was assessed. Sunday’s main event had both brothers running competitive times. Starting 11th, Andrew Bujdoso had his PCR chassis on rails moving into fourth on lap seven. Nose to tail with second and third, Andrew secured a fourth while Robert Bujdoso made progress throughout the weekend to finish 10th.
“The PCR chassis once again proved their speed in the hot, sticky conditions,” stated team owner Csaba Bujdoso. “I am fortunate to be working with great drivers. We look forward to tackle SummerNationals at Newcastle Motorsports Park.”
