Driver News: Troy Castaneda to Compete in Final Round of COTA

This weekend, March 9th and 10th, Troy Castaneda will compete in the final round of the Rotax Challenge of the Americas, “The premier winter karting series on the left coast.” ( This race will take place at the Autoclub Speedway in Fontana, CA.

Troy is returning to the seat of a kart after spending the last few years pursuing a full time open wheel career.

This weekend, Castaneda will be racing with ART Grand Prix America ( This team is the newest premier karting team in the world and has had amazing success in its short existence. Troy will be racing in the Senior Rotax Class. The last time Troy raced in this class was in 2010, winning the opening round at MSR Houston in Texas. In 2009 and 2010, he qualified in the faster, Rotax DD2 class, to the Rotax World Finals where the best of the best compete to win top honors. Castaneda was a front runner both years. In 2009, Castaneda traveled to Egypt and started the final in last place, 34th position, and climbed his way into the top five, finishing in 5th place. In 2010, he went to Italy and competed on the La Conca circuit qualifying 2nd, but was unfortunately involved in an incident in the final, bending his axle and sending him to the middle of the field.

“It’s been a few years since I really raced a kart,” says Troy, “but I’m excited to get back behind the wheel! These past few years have been extremely tough getting behind the wheel of anything, not just monetarily, but physically and emotionally as well. So, coming back to my roots is like a fresh start, a clearing of my mind, and I’m very much looking forward to racing this weekend.”

Last year, Troy stepped into the cockpit of an Indy Lights car for the first two rounds of the Firestone Indy Lights Championships ( with 2011 Indy 500 Champions Bryan Herta Autosport ( and has been pursuing a full time ride since the end of 2011.
